I will add your name to the April Rainbows surgery group thread, @cannygirl .

Well here I am back with Bonesmart! I found all the help, advice and friendship so encouraging in 2017-18 when I had a tough time with my LTKR. At that point my surgeon was going to crack on with my RTHR as soon as I was healed....and here I still am - waiting in 2021. Apparently I have medial pole arthritis which was missed on Xray and I was told that my hip wasn’t bad enough for surgery. There has been a long saga to get properly diagnosed and I have been quite demoralised as despite trying to keep up reasonable exercise and eating very carefully, I have put on weight that I had lost over the years and my mobility has declined a lot.
As elective surgery lists are now so long in the NHS in Scotland, I have decided to go privately and my appointment is 27th April. I am quite apprehensive as the recovery from my knee surgery was so very painful. Thank you for being there.

Bearing in mind that we are all different, I found my THR recovery was MUCH easier than my TKR @cannygirl. Hopefully it will go that way for you as well.

Increasingly as I have waited to have the hip replaced, I have had knee and back pain...is this normal? My left knee was replaced 2017 and is quite good now. I am waiting for my right hip to be replaced but I am having increasing pain in my right knee; the knee itself isn’t showing any signs of disease, not swollen, hot or tender to touch but it is painful. Is this likely to be referred hip pain?

All of us are different as are each hip. With my left I had referred pain down my thigh through my femur. With my right it would go all of the way to my foot. It hurt terribly in my instep and after replacement it hasn't done that again.

Is this likely to be referred hip pain?
Highly likely! Especially if you are limping. You might want to use a cane or crutch in the run up to your surgery. This will take the weight off that sore hip.

A family friend had excruciating knee pain, x ray showed a healthy knee, she was bone on bone in her pain free hip. Once she had a THR, her knee pain disappeared.
Sounds like you have referred pain to your knee from your hip, a THR should resolve this.

I’ve been noticing left knee pain the last few days. My RTHR is April 13. Hoping it goes away!

Had bouts of excruciating knee pain. Had already been diagnosed with hip arthritis, but didn't see how that was relevant.

Went to knee specialist. Perfect X-rays, shockingly good X-rays of the knees. This is likely a hip problem, he tells me. I had told him absolutely nothing about my hip.

And he was right.

Having a painful hip causes me to walk differently, putting stress on other joints - resulting in pain. So my surgeon says and it makes sense to me.

I've had more then one surgeon tell me my knee pain is most likely being caused by my bad right hip, and the pronounced limp I've developed during the onset.

I remember having knee pain before I had my LHTR also, and that dissipated immediately once I regained my stride and gait... really never to be thought of again until my other hip starting flaring up. Same for some lower back pain.. Once I could extend my leg normally, the back pain was gone.

Snap @cannygirl! My appointment is also on 27th at a private hospital in Scotland. I'll look out for you!

Hello @cannygirl
I hope you’re out of surgery and resting comfortably by now with pain well managed. I will look forward to following your thread on the recovery side where we can support and encourage you along the way. See you there soon! :)

Oh thank you . Here I am 5 days post-op and home again. I feel well blessed by the care I received in hospital. My husband is really trying to keep up the care now I am home

cannygirl's recovery thread is here:
Now POST-op
Please follow her progress in her recovery thread.
