[Bonesmart.org] Ride home after surgery.

Welcome Hipshot,
The more the merrier. Glad you found this site, as you have already found, there is a bunch of most helpful folk residing here.
I found the bumps to not be a problem, but curves were a different matter. Take them slow, and brace yourself against them. And the reclining seat is a big help, as are the pain meds prior.
I had an hour drive and was able to stop and pick up prescriptions.
I am only 5' 4", and have a small van. You will need extra leg room as you have to keep that leg out straight, and you need a little room to squiggle around some. But definitely no problems travelling.
Check back here for any and all problems or questions you may have. Welcome aboard.

Mine is in 2 days now, and I have been thinking of the ride home as well. Debating the idea of putting an air mattres in the back of my Trailblazer and ride home in style. lol Probably juyst sit in the front with pillows though. GL, and welcome

CMonroe,
Riding home in style is fine, but have you thought of how you are going to get yourself on that air mattress:pnc::doh:?
Front seat is a much better option. And pick a vehicle that is low to the ground to make your move from the wheelchair to the vehicle seat easier.
A good idea is to practice before your surgery to get an idea of how to go about the process.
And don't count on getting any help from the hospital staff; mine just rolled me out in the wheelchair and the rest was left up to my family and myself.

I rode home in a Toyota Corolla... getting in and out was the hard part. I was also about 10 minutes to home. A normal car is fine! The next day we used my in-law's Chevy Tahoe to get around and Leslie closed the door on my operated hip!!! Let me tell you that didn't feel good =), but if you can avoid that you will be fine! Let us know how it goes please.

Welcome Hipshot,
I am in the San Gabriel Valley. I had the right hip done as well. Love my new hip. I have already put many, many hiking miles on it in it's first year. I rode home in my Honda CRV. Just make sure as others have said that you can extend that leg out all the way in your car of choice.
They actually had me practice in a pretend vehicle in the hospital.

Seems to be a few socal people around now. I'm ready for a meeting of joints.

Thank you all, surgery is next week and I'm ready.(no,I'm not ready, just pretending:pray: )Tomorrow I will talk to my surgeon and monday is surgery time.I will have metal on metal (depuy) minimally invasive surgery so if any of you want to comment about this procedure and recovery, it would be great.
As far as transportation, with front seat moved back I should fit just fine.Hopefuly nobody will slam the door on my new hip:shk: ,road will be smooth and pain killers will work.:whis:
Thank you

A larger car is nice. I'm 5'11'', and the Corolla was uncomfortable the first time around. My Ford Pickup had plenty of room when I had the other hip done. I prefer the higher clearance of the pickup over the Corolla so you don't have to bend so much. One and a half years later and I still like the higher position.
