Hello friends.
Next week I'm scheduled for right hip replacement surgery.
Will I be able to ride home in a car?Hospital is located just ten miles from my house and only car available I have is mid size four door.My insurance doesn't pay for special transportation, forklift and a truck is not an option.
Can you share your experience with riding home after surgery, car type needed etc.?
Thank you

Hello, I think you will be fine. Im sure they will give you or you will have medicine for the ride home. I would have someone bring some/many pillows..Mine was about 45 min away. I dont really remember the ride...lol Good Luck to you on your surgery. I hope you post when you get time..Let us know how you are....:)

Welcome Hipshot! Well.....in another week, you'll just have to change your name! :skp:
YES!!! You WILL be able to ride home in a car! My hubby drove so slow I couldn't wait to get home! (PRECIOUS CARGO HE KEPT SAYING!!!) You'll feel better if you have some extra pillows ......don't even think of a forklift......that wouldn't be graceful now, would it? Best of luck and let us know how you do!:rotfl:

Hi Hipshot, put yours fears to rest - you will be OK in a normal car - I came home in an Nissan estate car (station wagon?). You have to put the seat back as far as you can, recline the backrest and have a plastic bag on the seat to allow you to swivel. You have to keep your operated leg fairly straight and use your good leg to help get in the car. There are instuctions on the web, but I am sure that a nurse will be able to help you with it when you come to leave. I was worried too, but you have to get home somehow.

The journey itself isn't too bad providing the roads are smooth, if there are lots of potholes then it could be a bit bumpy - but you will brace yourself for it.

Godd luck with the op - it is the best decision you will have made, then you can begin to live again afterwards.

Yes!!! Take it from these grannies!!!:hehe:

Did I say next week? I think I'm gettin dizzy
Surgery is August 17 at West Hills Hospital in San Fernando Valley.

my dh has a large pontiac, and before surgery i told him he would have to pick me up in that. after surgery i told him to bring my car it wasnt hard at all. 5'6". drive normal. take corners slow. you know i usually had a real bad jarring feeling when going over bumps befor surgery. eventhough i was sore after the bumps didnt cause that kind of pain.

Hipshot--I like the idea of hiring a town car. I am also 6' 2 " and was driven home in my car by my wife, from Philadelphia to Washington D.C., about 150 miles. But we have an SUV which was easier to get into and out of. Getting into and out of a car is actually a pretty awkward movement as you will discover in rehab. Take an extra dose of pain meds also. They gave me one fro the trip and it made a big difference.

oh yeah. that is important tbone glad you said that. i timed my pain meds around when i was going to leave the hospital. 1 hour before . worked wonders. even got to stop and pick up prescriptions.

Renting large car or van sounds like good idea too.First I'll try my car plus plenty of pillows and hope that works. If not, renting van or any large car would be a good alternative. If Tbone who is 6'2" fit in a car I should be able to do it,I'm 5'10".Medicine,pillows.... all very good advice.Thank you friends, all your help is greatly appreciated.:lvhrt:
cheers
