Hi to all metal knee owners here!
I had a partial knee in 2009.This failed and I had it revised to a TKR in 2013.The same surgeon performed both operations. He said that the first partial literally fell out.I was in great pain and needed a brace and crutches to walk before the TKR.
Now I am experiencing pain, swelling and an intermittent change in the shape of my knee (a bump appears and also a dent) which is making me think I might be heading for more trouble.
I worry that my thigh and/or shinbones have been damaged by the previous 2 surgeries which may a) be the cause of my problems and b)make a 3rd replacement very difficult.
I also worry that I am going to end up disabled - I like to walk a lot, but I expect a third replacement might put an end to my 5/6 mile walks.
Anyone have any experience or thoughts please?I live in Scotland.

Hello @Lizzy Bones and welcome to BoneSmart. I'm so sorry to read your post; you have been through a lot and it sounds like you are really struggling.

Have you had any testing done on your knee or sought a second opinion from a different surgeon yet? If you haven't done so, that might be the best way to find out what you are dealing with and with revision surgeon would help.

We have quite a few members who have had TKR revision surgery. I'm sure some will weigh in to share their experience.

I am not a Dr. but search Bonesmart IT Band.

I agree that it's time to see a completely different doctor, a revision specialist, who has no contact with your old doctor.

@Lizzy Bones .... it would be a good idea to locate at least one revision specialist for an opinion on your knee. Since you're in Scotland, it's going to be difficult for us to offer any suggestions for doctors, but I'll see if @Jaycey, my co-admin who is in the UK, has any special guidance for you.

I do want to reassure you that if you need a revision, a good surgeon who sees a lot of problem knees should be able to do the surgery with no difficulty. It would be highly unlikely that your knee was damaged to the point that a revision wouldn't work. Some of our members (especially those who have had stubborn infections) have had multiple revisions. It's all about finding the right surgeon to properly diagnose what is going on and have the expertise to fix it.

Likewise, ending up disabled is not something that happens with any kind of frequency. Please don't let this worry you. But you do need to start talking to surgeons to see what is going on. You'll need x-rays and possibly some additional imaging. It's not possible for us to determine the problem over the internet with just the small amount of information you've provided.

Please let us know how you're getting along. We'll be here to help as much as we can.

Thanks so much, this is extremely reassuring and helpful.

@Lizzy Bones Unfortunately the National Joint Registry only covers England and NI. I've changed your thread title so that members from Scotland might see it and come here to offer advice. I agree with Jamie - you just need to find someone whose specialty is dealing with problem knees.

Thanks -yes, I would at least like to get an opinion on its present condition before anything drastic happens, like it did before.I suspect surgeons in Scotland are seriously ovet-stretched as it is.I have heard of waiting lists for TKRs running into years. But if there was a private and well endorsed knee specialist I would gladly pay for a consultation.

@Lizzy Bones Can you tell me the name of the surgeon who did your original op and the hospital? I have done a bit of research but want to make sure anyone I recommend is not in any way connected to your previous surgeon.

Paying for a consultation is a route I took twice. Yes, the wait times for surgery are staggering these days. But at least you can get a diagnosis up front and work with the surgeon's medical secretary to get on the wait list if needed.

Thank you for this.Should I DM you the name for confidentiality reasons?Or is that not necessary here?

You can name a surgeon here - we do this quite often. But if you are not comfortable just send me a PM.

No that's fine-just as I am new here, wanted to check. It was Mr Ivan Brenkel at Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy.Bearing in mind all my surgery was free (ie on the National Health Service), I am very grateful for what I received. However these days, what with the on-going impact of covid and chronic underfunding, anything other than very urgent care is hard to come by, and I don't feel able to ask, in all honesty. However I do feel I need some conversation with an expert, if only to reassure me that my knee is ok or otherwise, as objectively as possible.

There is a group of surgeons in Edinburgh who have formed a partnership. Plug Edinburgh Orthopaedic Specialists into any search engine. The several of the partners who specialise in knee surgery mention interest in complex knee revisions.

If you just want reassurance, I think a conversation with someone in this partnership would be a good start.

Please keep us updated!

Oh my goodness thank you so much-really appreciate your help and interest from across the Atlantic!
Will let you know how it all goes.
LB

Anyone know anything about a consultant surgeon called Ms Chloe Scott who is based in Edinburgh and did some training in Boston.
Just trying to decide which specialist to ask to look at my knee.

@Lizzy Bones I did a bit of research on Chloe Scott and she seems very knowledgeable. Key is that she specialises in complex cases. Unfortunately surgeons in Scotland are not registered on the NJR database so we can't see her numbers in terms of how many surgeries she does. But you can certainly ask that question.

Would you be able to see the consultant privately? I think the cost is around £200. I saw the consultant privately before both of my THRs and then got on their NHS list for surgery.
