What has the outcome been for those who had to go through revision surgery from an infected knee implant?

Are you having a two stage revision---where they will put in a spacer filled with anitbiotics for six weeks? Or a single stage revision when they put the new knee in right away?

Infection is always serious as @RestAssured Sonja will tell you. But, there have been plenty of success stories after infection and revision. Let us know more about your situation.

This is a friend of mine. Retiring Tues and going in for surgery Wed. Told him about BS so wanted him to hopefully get some input and help him go into surgery feeling better.
Thx

@b1i4u2,

Welcome! I am sorry it is under these circumstances that you found us, but at the same time, we have experienced the same issues and some of us are out living life to the fullest! I am living "the best of my life" now, instead of living in pain from infection. I had a one stage revision and in January, I will be power walking the Houston 1/2 marathon!

It took awhile to get where I am, but oh the rewards are well worth it!:happydance:

Mine was done by Dr. Maale in Plano also!

@b1i4u2.... I'm glad you joined us here on BoneSmart! As these folks have said, revisions can be very successful when there is a problem that needs to be resolved. Infection is frequently the issue that requires a revision.

Do you have a good revision surgeon now or are you searching for one? It is important that your revision surgeon is used to working with infections and coordinates with an infection specialist as well.

Please do tell us more about your situation and don't hesitate to ask any questions that you may have. We're here to support you!

I had a one stage revision on 9/10/14 with Dr Maale in Plano, TX. Wherever you go to have it done, please please make sure the Dr specializes in revisions. Not just ur standard OS. It has been a very rough 20 days since mine, but I'm making slow n steady progress. Keep round the clock pain control and plenty of rest. Please know we are here for you so don't hesitate to contact the group as needed. Bless you and good luck tomorrow.

I had a two stage revision in 2009 following an infection in my left knee. At the time the surgery and subsequent recovery was long, frustrating and at times painful, but 5 years on I am living a normal life and can do almost everything that I want to. I haven't yet mastered kneeling, and getting up and down from the floor elegantly, but that may be more to do with the number of surgeries I have had on my left knee rather than because of the infection.

All the best to your friend. Do keep us posted on his progress. Linda x

I heard from John's wife today and he got through the surgery ok. Definitely infected but no damage to bone and tissues. Thanks everyone for welcoming him. I know he will be back once he can.
