Greetings,

So Im a 56 year old Dad of 13 year old twin boys who play every sport....Ive been coaching them in baseball, football, Basketball etc...lol... I have 2 rotator tears on both sides and been getting shots for years every 3 Months...The left rotator ruptured about 2 Months ago and my left arm above my elbo literally don't work...I cant throw a ball to my kids, not even underhanded so that is my main motivation for surgery besides pain constantly etc... So, the thought of power tools in the O.R.
being used on me flips me out...Surgery in scheduled 3/27/23 and I'm not excited..I actually feel angry because of the other shoulder tear and I need a knee replacement..(A lot of sport injuries unattended to) I know I let all this stuff go and now I need to pay that price...Im also aware that a lot of folks wish they had my problems for cases much more serious than mine...It just sucks! Any words from peps who went through this im all ears! Thank you for listening...

@Restoguy
Welcome to BoneSmart, glad you joined us!
Let me tag @djklaugh for you, she has had multiple joint replacements including both shoulders.

Being nervous and concerned prior to joint replacement is normal, it is a. major surgery, and yes the power tools are intimidating.

Keep us posted on how you are doing,

Aw - just tell staff you don't want to see or hear anything. The will put you out into a nice, comfy sleep and you won't remember anything.

We were all in that scared space pre-op. Even those of us who have had multiple joint replacements. Just part of the process. Keep posting here. It does help ease the nerves.

@Restoguy Welcome to BoneSmart! Yes, I've had 2 shoulder replacements but mine are standard ones not reverse. So my experience and out comes (excellent!) may be different from yours. But with any joint replacement the key to the best possible outcome is PATIENCE! Taking things slowly after the surgery, healing first before trying to do any strength training, following your surgeon's instructions, and doing the PT exercises diligently. Do read through some of the threads here and in shoulder recovery to see how others have managed with this surgery. It can take quite a while to get the shoulder and all the muscles and tendons in that area back to full functioning. The shoulder is a complex joint so lots of things need to get moved about when the joint is replaced.

Yeah it sucks to have to have surgery of any kind and it sucks to have to recuperate from surgery and be out of action for an extended period of time from coaching and helping your kids with their sports .... but you can still cheer them on, do verbal coaching, and support all of their efforts. "Don't get mad, get even" ... in your case prove you can over come this temporary set back and can return to doing all the things you love.

As for the surgery itself.... yes get the general anesthesia or what ever is recommended and sleep through the process. Hang on to your sense of humor and relax. Everyone involved in your surgery - surgeon, anesthesiologist, nurses, etc are professionals and they do these surgeries every working day. Their primary focus is on your well being!

There is an article in our library about reverse shoulder replacements ... a bit technical but may help you understand what is involved and what to expect. https://bonesmart.org/forum/threads...-shoulder-replacement-post-op-mobility.68933/
