THR Results of my appointment

I have looked up Doctor Shiraz K Patel Paducah KY on this web site:
https://doctor.webmd.com/doctor/4577615/shiraz-patel-conditions-procedures

This is what I found:
CONDITIONS TREATED
  • Bunions
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Lateral Epicondylitis
  • Fractures, Dislocations, Derangement, and Sprains
  • Internal Derangement of Knee
  • Internal Derangement of Knee Cartilage
  • Osteoporosis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Sciatica

PROCEDURES PERFORMED
  • Neurological Testing
  • Occupational Therapy Evaluation
  • Wound Care
  • Physical Therapy
  • Knee Arthroscopy
  • Shoulder Arthroscopy
  • Joint Arthroscopy
  • Bunion Surgery
  • Shoulder Surgery
  • Carpal Tunnel Decompression
  • Hip Replacement
  • Knee Replacement
  • Lower Arm/Elbow/Wrist Fractures and Dislocations
  • Lower Leg/Ankle Fractures and Dislocations
  • Hip/Femur Fractures and Dislocations
From those lists, it looks as if he is not a specialist in hip replacements, but is more of a general orthopaedic surgeon who does a variety of orthopaedic procedures. This is not the type of surgeon you need for your hip replacement.
You need a surgeon who does over 100 hip replacements every year.

I had my first appointment with my new Doctor that I have been referred to. I was referred to this Doctor because the Doctor who did my SI joint surgery back in 2016 thought I had torn rotator muscles but the Radiologist that read my hip MRI said that I have FAI and a torn labrum. I thought that a torn Labrum and FAI condition would mean an automatic hip replacement at my age (67) because they don’t like to do FAI/Labrum repair on older patients. However the Doctor wants to do more test before we make any decisions on how to treat my problem. It seems that my hip does not have much arthritis in it for my age and that my symptoms do not fit the normal criteria. So the plan is to give me a pain shot under fluoroscope on 08/07/20 in my hip and see if all the pain I am having goes away. If all the pain goes away then we will consider hip replacement, if the pain does not go away then we will look for the cause. I am 99.9% certain that the pain is coming from the hip but all I can do is follow the plan for now.

@golfer67. I just want to share that I had a hip injection before my last hip replacement. My hip pain came on quite swiftly on the right and my OS agreed based on examination, pain, movement limitations, and x-rays that I needed a hip replacement. My x-rays did show moderate to severe arthritis but the examination was more telling for him.

He also knew that the insurance company would require examples of conservative treatment. They scheduled my hip injection and my surgery at that appointment so I would have a slot reserved. I have to say that the injection did not make my pain go away, at first it seemed to decrease it about 50% but this did not lasts long and most movements were still limited and pain returned. I reported that the hip felt better very briefly and then the pain returned.

We went ahead with the scheduled hip replacement and life greatly improved post surgery and recovery. The other thing with hip injections is that most orthopaedists have at least 3m wait in between injection and joint replacement.
