My dad (age 69) had a hip replacement in June 09. Following 2 dislocations within a couple of weeks, the surgeons replaced part of the hip last Friday. Whilst sitting yesterday, the new hip became dislocated. Unsurprisingly he's become very anxious. He's still in hospital (I'm sure the best place). They're talking of imobilising him for 3 weeks.

1. Are there any exercises he can do whilst "imobilised" to stop muscle wastage.

2. When he is able to move - can you recommend some physio exersises?

3. Any other words of advice, wisdom, would be appreciated.

Welcome worried daughter. I would be worried too. Any reason given for the dislocations? Is he being treated by a physical therapist while in the hospital?
OUr nurse Jo will be on at some point and be able to help more. I just wanted to say hi and welcome

It's pretty obvious to me that either the cup and/or the prosthesis has not been implanted at the correct angle. I'd take him off and find a revision surgeon who'll redo the hip and make sure it's done properly. Immobilisation is not going to cure a badly inserted hip.

Welcome to BoneSmart, Celestine. I know this MUST be a very difficult thing for you and your Dad to deal with. But hang in there and the folks on this forum will be available to help you and support you.

I'll second Jo's post and say you need to get your Dad to a revision specialist as soon as possible for a second opinion. These are the orthopedic surgeons that specialize in problems that need to be corrected. It is important that you get this second opinion from a doctor who is not associated with your current surgeon in any way. That's the only way you'll get a truly independent opinion.

Are you near a large city? Hopefully so and you'll have several doctors from which to choose.

Thanks you for your responses. After 2 dislocations the cup was replaced, then it dislocated again. He's still in hospital waiting for the cup to "fuse".
