Hi Judy and myhips, I am 8 wks post op RTHR and went back to work this past Monday. Was more tired than I thought I would be--now I know why the Dr recommends a minimum of 8 wks before going back to a full time schedule. My job is quite demanding in terms of hours and running around in our community. By end of long day on Tuesday all I could do was crawl into bed and watch tv. Think I fell asleep by 9 and chose to skip the gym on Wed morn to give myself a break .

Today was another busy day and tomorrow I am supposed to help at an evening program at our county college.

My question to Josephine and all: is it normal to have renewed swelling around the incision and a little rash here and there on thigh (near where the drain was that recycled blood during surgery? I think now that I am back to work and not putting my legs up during the day, some swelling has returned. Showed hubby this a.m. and he suggested calling Dr. Will see if it gets better.

I am looking forward to the weekend. Sure do miss my time off!!!

Laurie, I moved your post into a thread of its own so's not to derail myhips thread and to hopefully get you more responses.

Yes, it is perfectly normal to find your incision area starts to get swollen again! What did you expect - it wasn't going to complain after all that running around? Of course it is! And the rash may well be a part of that. You need to get icing and elevating your leg, that is all. And rest as much as you can when not at work. NO housework or cooking for the first couple of weeks until you acclimatise to being back at work.

Hi Josephine, So same response with hip (I had RTHR, fortunately no knee problems, but can understand how you would get confused as this is a huge club!!!)
Thanks a bunch.

Hi Laurie,
Like you, I this is my first week back at work ( am just over six weeks LTHR ) and I too have a little bit of swelling around the incision and I can “feel” it is there if you know what I mean – no pain or anything though. And the “Sitting on a wallet” effect is a bit more pronounced. Also my lower legs are a little swollen. All due I think to the extra running around, and I have been working full days.

Agree with you about the tiredness, I have been having Very early nights. Josephine, does the “NO housework or cooking for the first couple of weeks until you acclimatise to being back at work” apply to hips? If so, I’ll try to behave better next week ;)

Am truly glad it is Friday here downunder, and a long weekend as well.

Laurie and Monica,
I am a hippy and did not go back to work. At 8 weeks I was still on pain meds for all the ligaments, tendons whatever is around the hip. I can surely see how going back to work at 6 or 8 weeks would have that affect. But, I would certainly call my doc's office. Just to be sure. Of course staying out of the kitchen would work for me.
I am in pt for my thoracic spine. I told my pt today how bad the pain got on monday when I was in the kitchen cooking and cleaniing up and making brownies. As I left he said Stay out of the kitchen!!!!
Sorry you both had to go back so early (I was written out for 12 weeks) but just come home and relax and put your feet up.

Judy

Hi Judy,
Thank you, advice taken and I am at home with feet up and dinner (last night's yummy leftovers) will be brought to me whenever I feel like it :) Oh, and the glass of wine is going down nicely as well.
Cheers,
Monica

Ooops! What ever was I thinking! I edited to post accordingly but you are quite right - recipe stays much the same.

I'd say so - though perhaps not to quite the same degree.

Josephine, Oh say it is so re: hip recovery and 2 wks taking it easy. Have already informed my hubby!!! Swelling is better this a.m. Will go into work later as I have the late night tonight.

Thanks, and Monica, will definitely look forward to that glass of wine when I get home!!

Have a good day all,
Laurie
