Hello,
I am new to the forum and am so thankful to have found it! I'm wondering if most recommend going to a rehab facility after total knew replacement surgery and if so, for how long? My mother is having the surgery in August and I'm concerned her doctor didn't recommend this (she is 65). My siblings and I plan to fly down and help my father with her the first couple of weeks, but I'm thinking it would be better for her to be in a rehab facility first. Any opinions or thoughts are appreciated.

Welcome, Jen! I am a hippie,,,,,but I had rehab for 10 days and I highly recommend it! Since she'll have so much family support, she's sure to do well! Take care, and let us know of your decisionb. Whichever way she goes, she'll do great!!!!

Thanks Judles! When you say you had rehab for 10 days, do you mean you stayed in a facility or had it at home? I'm sorry if that's a dumb question - new to this medical terminology! :)

Jen.....don't worry! There are NO dumb questions! I had rehab in a facility after my hospital stay! They specialized in orthopedicc so I had pt (physical therapy) and ot (occupational) therapy every day! It made a tremendous difference in my quick recovery!

Hi I didnt do in patient rehab. Usually you get an at home P. Therapist for 1-2 weeks if you chose that instead. Then out patient. Alot of people did do in patient on here. They can tell you about that. My home PT was great. Take blood pressue, checked the bandage, etc... and then the excercises. I did fine. Everyone is diff. though, she will need help the first week or 2. Im sure everything will work out well. She will do fine, and feel much better in the long run.....Im sure youll get some views on in patient soon.........Oh and welcome...Tell her, ice , her best friend lol, and medicine and elevate........post anytime......

Thank you Texas! Did the pt come everyday at first or a few times a week? I'm sure my Mom will find all this out at her pre-op, but I like to be prepared! :)
Thank you again!

Hi, Jemeh5. Welcome to BoneSmart.

There are pros and cons to going to a rehab facility and to coming straight home. If the home has multiple stairs or there would be problems navigating around, that's a good reason for some time in a rehab facility. Also the therapy is more focused there - usually at least a couple of times a day instead of 3-5 times per week (whatever the doctor orders) when you're home.

But on the other hand, with someone there to help 24/7 home is a better place to be mentally. More comfortable.

If you are considering rehab, why don't you pop in and visit a couple of possible places. Ask to see their PT rooms, patient rooms, dining room and talk about what they do for knee patients. That may help you make up your mind. Oops....just realized that you are not in the same town as your mother....possibly your mom and dad could go do a little visiting at rehab facilities and let mom decide which she prefers.

In the end, she will be fine with either choice I'm sure.

My doctor didn't suggest rehab till three days after my surgery (I had my surgery on a Wednesday and the first time I heard mention of "rehab" was on a Friday evening). Up till that point, I actually expected to go home on that Sunday! I was in for ten days after that Sunday- and luckily for me, my rehab place was down the hall from the ortho recovery ward I'd been in for those four days.

I requested rehab, OS was surprised (I did it because I have 5 kids)....I am really pleased I did it, because it got me going and in the way of exercise from really early on.

From the point of view of helping at your mums when you get home, I would stagger the help with your siblings, so that only one was there at a time....and therefore have more care for longer......

Yes they came everyday 1st week then every other day second week. . I agree she will need help for awhile....I guess its up to each person though what is best.....I bought this recumbant bike that people told me about on here, best thing I ever bought..........You can go from real easy to lil harder etc...In time anyway. What does she want to do ?

Hi and welcome!
I'm almost 63 and had BTKR on May 18. I spent 3 days in the hospital with 1 unit of OT and 2 of PT each day. Then I went to an intensive rehab for 6 days where I had 2 units of OT and PT as well as group upper and lower body exercises--yes, that was 3 hours every day. Since I came home the PT has been coming to the house 3 times each week to work on strengthening, stairs, and longer walks outdoors--1 more week of that and then outpatient PT 3 times a week--those sessions will be 1 hour long.
Your Mom is very lucky to have you and your siblings to help her on this journey. There will be good and bad days but it is so worth doing this and getting her life back!
Blessings,
Irene
