Hi Everyone,
I have an old root canal that became infected a couple of years ago, and seemed to have been successfully treated then. However it still sometimes becomes slightly tender to bite on, one time a year ago to the point of needing antibiotics to control a mild infection that showed up on an x-ray. Since my RTHR 4 weeks ago, the tooth has become tender again just in the past couple of days. Should I take prophylactic antibiotics just in case? A U.K. doctor gave me Erythromycin last summer in case of a flare up, so I can easily start that right away if it seems wise to do so.
Thanks,
Nick

Don't take meds that you have from last summer - BAD idea.....there are all kinds of antibiotics and that may not be the one you need. Call your surgeon immediately and tell him about the problem. If it was me, I would want to take some antibiotics just to be sure, but see what he says. Also, immediately make an appointment with your dentist to find out what is going on with that tooth. You need to take care of this immediately just in case there really is an infection going on in there.

Post again and let us know how things go, okay!!!

Nick listen to Jamie - she's spot on! Contact your OS and explain the problem and then get yourself to the dentist asap! The problem with taking antibiotics of your own accord (or before you get to a dentist) is that it will settle the tooth down (probably) and can mask whatever symptoms you are getting - that will make it difficult for your dentist to pinpoint where the problem is. Root fillings CAN fail - you need to have it looked at! (Ive been a dental nurse for a LONG time - I know what I'm talking about! :)
