Hi everyone,
I am looking for a recommendation on a hip specialist that does total hip replacement for patients with avascular necrosis. I currently have Medi-cal insurance due to my low income so I am looking for a surgeon who accepts this insurance.

Thank you!

@attyboy Do try our Surgeon Locator as Chris recommended. This surgeon is in our database of surgeons recommended by our members. You would need to call to confirm what insurance he takes:

Dr. John Dearborn
Co-director of The Institute for Joint Restoration.
2000 Mowry Ave
Fremont, CA 94538
510-818-7200

I have used the locator. I just wanted to get any personal insight on any hip specialist in the area. I’m 26 with AVN so I just want to make sure I get surgery with the right doctor.

Any hip surgeon will be fully experienced with AVN. It is one of the most common reasons for THR.

Sorry to give more insight on to why I’m asking,
I have worked in a orthopedic office and I have seen the surgeons I worked with get thrown patients that had bad surgeries due to lack of experience/care from their previous orthopedists. I just wanted to get suggestions from patients here if they have anyone they recommend.

attyboy,
You can check these two surgeon scoring sites for how surgeons do with joint replacement.
One of the most important questions you can ask is how many joint replacements they perform every year.

Have you checked at UCSF or Stanford for a surgeon?

I was looking into UCSF. Do you recommend any hip specialist there?

Hi,
Has anyone here gotten a THR done by Dr. Nicholas Pirnia in Northern California??

@attyboy One of my Dr. recommended Dr. Sah, who did his wife's THR.
Used to be in practice with Dr.Dearborn. Office in Menlo Park.
Excuse me for expressing my opinion here; at your age have you looked into
Hip Resurfacing ? Hope I don't get into trouble here since I'm a newbie.

@XBreadman hip resurfacing has nothing to do with age. It is all about the condition of the hip joint and the patient's own situation.

Why don't you start your own thread and tell us a bit about your story?

Hi Atty,

I'm pretty new to the Bay Area, and on the Peninsula, not in the East Bay. There are several recommendations from this board, and a history of how I selected my surgeon, on my preop thread Surgeon In SF Bay Area needed

Hubby and I have private insurance on the individual market -- blue shield CA. We have found that UCSF takes all insurances. I would look through all the profiles on the UCSF site, then call their ortho dept. They can tell you about insurance coverages. UCSF has a special department for this too.

I had an appt with Dr. Hansen at UCSF, who came highly recommended, which I canceled only because I wanted my hip done ASAP; I found a surgeon (Dr. Hartford at PAMF ortho) that I was and am comfortable with, and I thought UCSF would take longer than PAMF to get it scheduled and done. I second guessed that cancellation decision over and over again during the COVID delay.

Truly all the best in your search. My recovery is going along well, and I certainly recommend Dr. Hartford and Dr. Lannin at PAMF without reservation, and I'd expect that Dr. Graw at the same group is great too.
