Hi I am new here, and I have severe avascular necrosis, my ortho doesn't want to put me through TKR @ 42 years old, just yet. So he is suggestion partial knee replacement with necrotic lesions being removed as well, and filled with metal plugs, has anyone else had this done, bone lesions removed?? Just curious, I feel so isolated right now, this has put my life on hold and it is very difficult to deal with.
Thank you
C

Hi C, Welcome to the forum. Please know you are not alone or isolated. OK? Knee pain like we have or had is a debilitating thing that has the ability to stop us from living our lives the way we want. Good news is, KR, partial and total is getting very common and you found us! I don't know too much about avn, bone dying right? Have you sought a 2nd opiniion? Again, not knowing if avn changes everything, but many of us are under 60, way under 30s, 40s & 50s and had to fight some to get it because of our age. Watch for Josephine, the nurse moderator and sweetheart. She knows the medical stuff better. Either way glad you're here.

Yes, I have heard of the bone plugs thing but not a lot and never seen it used. I think a rep waved a pamphlet under my nose once just before I retired! But sadly can't tell you much about it. I'll keep looking around, though.

Thank you both for your input, I actually have never heard of the plugs being used. Also wanted to thank Jennifer for her kind words of support, it is a scary thing and its nice to know others care enough to leave me a reply, thanks and god bless,
Christine

No problem. Someone took the time to talk to me, down the road you'll do it for some one else and so on. See if you can do something sooner rather than later. 42 it to young to suffer with so much pain and disability.

Chris welcome to the forum. Can't offer any insights but good luck with your surgery and post often. Sue

Hi Christine,
I can't help you with the avascular necrosis or bone plug part--- but I had a medial PKR 6 months ago and it is now my "good knee"! I wouldn't say I healed fast--- but it is doing very well now (some of those ads for PKRs make it sound like you will be running marathons in 3 weeks....). Even a partial is still major bone surgery, but mine is doing very well and is 2/3 my own natural knee. My ROM is excellent and I just got back from my vacation in Mexico where I went snorkeling and sailing and swimming in the Caribbean and basically anything I wanted to do..... I know there is a TKR in my future (depending on how quickly the OA spreads into the rest of my knee) but at 51 I was glad to keep most of my own knee--- and will deal with the TKR when the time comes--- most likely in both knees)

Good luck!

Hi there everyone thank you for the support and input. I just had an xray on my left knee to make sure it was ok, so far so good, right knee doesn't have any fractures or dislocations, so I am happy about that. I will see my PCP tomorrow for blood tests to determine (if we can) the etiology of the avascular necrosis. So hopefully I don't have diabetes, lupus, sickle cell ect....Beachcomber thank you for your insights and Nurse thanks for the note, it is much appreciated :)

Chris,

I am not 40 yet, it is around the corner, though (October). I just had TKR on June 9. I had gone to one doctor that wanted to do a partial, and in getting other opinions, I found that the partial would not work for me. If it works for you, good!!!!

This is a scary thing, but you will be happy. Every time I experience pain, stiffness, or swelling, I can't help but be proud of the fact that this is a GOOD pain!!! This makes it all worth it!

Good luck to you and keep coming back!
Hess
