I feel a little dumb asking this due to my medical background. I had a rt. TKA and it seems that 95% of my pain is within a 2 1/2 inch circle on the medial (inside) side of the knee. Virtually no pain on the lateral side of the rt. knee.

Is this procedure related due to retraction of the tissue? My incision is a revision of my first scar for an ACL repair 30 years ago.

Thanks, Tom

Tom -
If you find out - please let me know. I too am a right TKR and omg the medial side is where it hurts like...... It feels like something is going to pop out there. Prior to surgery it was my lateral side that has had ALL the pain. And it is circular for me as well. I mentioned it to pt and he said it may have to do with the swelling. I also have the feeling of a tight band over the top of the knee when we are bending for Rom. I will ask again tomorrow at pt and see if they can enlighten me. But you're right - it is the only true PAIN beside that when working on rom. hmmmmm Maybe Josephine has a clue.

That would be my guess, Tom. probably the retractors or the bone spikes they use to retract. But not only that; the stretching of the tissues can cause such pain in the medial ligament as well. Which can all be aggravated by swelling, just as your pt said.

See, everything's connected to everything else. It's all very close together so what aggravates one structure is bound to have a knock-on effect to something else.

What's your medical training? I like to know when I'm talking to a doctor or something!!
[Bonesmart.org] Question regarding pain/location

Hello friends,

Thanks for your input. Josephine, my background is 33 yrs. as an allied health professional with a concentration in flight medicine, high risk labor and delivery, vascular medicine---cath lab and peripheral suites. Finally, for the last 12 years I have been a medical surgical clinical and sales person. Got tired of being on the road for 150 nights per year. Made a career change and will be teaching health occupations technology--starting in 2 weeks.

My knee was destroyed due to a basketball injury in 1970. Had a poor repair and put up with it. Had no significant pain but had poor stability. Got tired of having to watch every step on uneven ground and not being able to hunt and fish like I used to. Decided that this summer would be a good opportunity to take the time and set myself on a better course. Now 7 weeks post op and doing pretty well.

I took the previous suggestions regarding sleep. I take 3 Ibuprofen, 2 benadryl, and 2 percocet 1 hour before bed time. Have slept well the last 2 nights. Pretty much am amazed at how the swelling has regulated itself with the Ibuprofen. I couldn't take NSAIDs for the first 6 weeks due to a drug study in which I was participating. Within 3 hours of taking the Ibuprofen, I could feel a soothing feeling in the knee---it was remarkable.

You may wonder about my medicine doses....I am 6 ft 4 inches and 230lbs.
Following surgery--coming home--I was in significant pain and was taking 2 percocet every 4 hours. Now down to just a dose at night for sleep.

Thanks for all of your kind replies. Have a great Friday and a terrific weekend.

Regards, Tom

Hi,
I am 5 weeks post-op. I had a RTKR on July 3. I have the same problem in the EXACT same area. In fact when the therapist is pushing on me or I am self bending, that spot is what is hindering me. It feels like it is gonna rip. That area also cramps like crazy when I (or the pt) are really, really pushing for better ROM. I have been very, very fortunate that I have not had much swelling at all. But boy, that one little area is something else. Thanks Jo,
Glad to know what it could be.
