People who've had a PE are at risk of another ... except that they are usually on long term anticoagulants and under surveillance as well. In any future surgery they will have the a/c ramped up some and the surveillance will be increased. Never the less, it's still a scary thing to have happen.

You might also talk to your surgeon about having a Greenfield filter fitted. This is a device implanted into the vena cava, the large vein that takes blood from the body back into the heart. It catches blood clots that travel up from the legs, preventing them from reaching the lungs. A number of previous members with similar histories have had them fitted a couple of weeks prior to surgery and felt more confident for it. The procedure is normally carried out by a cardiologist under local anaesthetic with a little sedation.
