Pre-surgery glitches

Gail -how exciting! Glad you have an early surgery time. I had to be at admitting at 5:30am, surgery at 7:30. Trust me, once you get through the first few days, each day gets better. I remember being in the hospital thinking my leg feels SO heavy, will it ever be normal again? Yes, it will!!! Within that week, I was able to slowly start bending my knee and walking again.

We will talk to you on the recovery side!

p.s. I made a contribution to the site the other day too!

Gail, I'll be thinking about you tomorrow.....sleep well tonight!!

And DON'T walk barefoot on your wood floors!!!! :)

This is my last post on this thread. Next post will be on a recovery thread. I will hit the sack early tonight. Up at 5 AM, antibacterial shower, drop the dog (yellow lab) off at mother-in-law's, then away we go! Talk to you again sometime next week!
Gail

God bless, Gail - our prayers go with you!

Hop, have you been to an eye doctor since making Visine-A a daily habit? A few years back, I used it all the time and the eye doctor said it was damaging my eye and that it should only be used occasionally. I can't remember what it was doing but he advised me NOT to use it on a daily basis. Maybe you can read the advisory that comes with the package. I don't mean to scare you but it's true, it can become addictive!

Yeah, my eye doctor said "Visine A" dries the eyes out, and that there are better prescription drops, but they are over $100. per 1/8 ounce. I tried to get the prescription drops but my insurance refused to pay for them.
The reason you get hooked is because you get used to not having irritants in your eyes causing that ichy eye thing, so you notice it more when you don't use it.
It's true though, I should only use it during allergy season; not all year round. I will cut back when the pollen is low again.

"Addictive" is an emotive term which is highly misleading. Addicts are generally applied to people who would go to extraordinary and antisocial lengths to obtain their medications. "Becoming dependant" is a situation where a person feels they cannot cope without a certain medication. This often happens with antidepressants and sleeping pills. Whilst "habit forming" is a when one literally gets into a habit of using something to the point where they barely think about it any more. This may happen where there are after effects of using the substance either too frequently or in the absence of symptoms, in other words, not applying good judgement before using it. I would suggest that this is more likely to be the case with the Visine.

Jo, can you tell me what symptoms and how severe they have to be before most surgeons will postpone a THR. I have started getting some sniffles and a bit of a sore throat, and my next surgery is 3 days away.... BUT I also, like Gail, am blessed with seasonal allergies, so it COULD be just that.... but everyone around me has been getting sick latlely(hubby had it for like 2 weeks and is just NOW getting better, and my boss had it for like a week really BAD).... what would stop me from getting it done?? I'm hoping this "bug" if it is will hold off for like a week or two.... And are there any complications if you come down with something AFTER you have surgery??

It's more a matter of the anaesthetic than the surgery. So anything respiratory will need to be evaluated beforehand. The reason being that when an endotrachel tube is used, it could push bugs into the lungs and risk the patient getting a chest infection.

However, when a spinal/epidural is used the risk is less so if it's just a virus, it is possible it might not be of any concern. I would think that in three days you should know one way or another if it's a virus or an allergy.

Hope you get feeling better quick, Kym. That wouldn't be any fun to be emotionally prepared for your surgery and then have to postpone it. Maybe it is just allergies - I know my hubby is suffering big time from them right now.

Yeah I am still feeling the same, however I haven't run a fever at all and my nose is still clear, just a runny now and then.... no cough, no fever, no body aches, just some sniffles and a bit of a sore/itchy throat and ears.... makes me think allergies.... I called into my surgeons office to let them know and see what they are thinking about it.... and now I wait! And I wait too for the pre-op call, as to what time I am to be there tomorrow.... EEK

Your symptoms sound similar to mine just 2 days before surgery. The OS's office seemed unimpressed. They said as long as I didn't have a fever or chest congestion, the game was on! I was getting a spinal, and that may make a difference in their criteria for go/no go. Hope you're a go!
