Build your quads as much as possible. Lunges, stairs, squats, leg presses. If you are unable to do some due to bad knees, try the pool. If you have a facility close by that you can do aquatic aerobics. I have had good success with post surgery. Only had a couple of weeks before my surgery and my OS wanted me to rest so I didn't do any more damage. Had injured my right knee and the left was bad also.

Read other threads related to your question. Many have posted there to give good advice.

My best to you!

Blessings,

Hi -
I spent hours looking for the same thing on the web (at our SLOOOOOOOW dialup speed) before I found one. Kept finding books, articles, and commercial programs. But here's a great website: broken link removed: https://www.wmt.com/kneesite/Patients/preopex.asp
I just started my exercises this morning. Good luck with your exercises and your surgery! I read that pre-surgery exercises can increase the speed with which you regain mobility after surgery at something like 70%. A great motivator for all of us!

Thanks Eleanor, that's exactly what I was looking for! Getting started tonight.. I should be ready by Oct!
Thanks again

Glad to help. I began my exercises yesterday. The sketches and directions are so clear and easy to follow -- and you don't have to download a video and a lot of other stuff! Good luck!

I agree if I had to do it over I would so work on my quads. I remember after surgery looking at my leg trying to raise it and it wouldnt move, So yes if you can do it now start......Good Luck to you....I think you will be just fine...

Hi-I have become the QUEEN of the QUADS lately--I will have surgery 8/10 NEXT MONDAY-OMG! I am excited but nervous (I know this is normal) and spend each day doing a hundred leg lifts with weights plus other strengthening leg exercises and time on my exercise bike and/or Leslie Sansone walking DVDs--boy does my bad knee struggle with all of this plus the rest of my muscles---maybe it is preparing me for PT-I hope! I also did (until 3 weeks ago) 60 minutes of pool exercises---boy do I miss the pool. However all of this has not made my chubby body into a size 2-ha-ha!

Anyway -do what you can and work on those quad muscles now.Best of luck and also this forum is a great source of information. Nancy

Thanks for that link, Eleanor. I dropped it into the Recurring Information forum in the Information Centre.

You're welcome! Anything to make it easier for us looking forward (???) to knee replacement surgery...

Indeed! My sister has made use of it already (Janis)

Thank you, what a great site for easy to follow exercises, although I have been making some attempt at exercising I have 8 weeks today til surgery, so I promise to do these twice a day from now.

I ahd had previous surgery ans the therapists there knew of this "tough minded" girl, who used to wok with them, was part-time with other hospital..did housecalls. out of pocket. I trusted the PT's completely. Over this year and a half, while ai waited for someone to step up and do both of mine...sh came to the house, scooped out my neesa, made suggestions...than gve me written and oral instructions with actuasl practice with her...several times..The I was on my own. Fidles around with them for about 4 months..cause they hurt...then gor over that and got to doing all exercises twice a day, with a 2lb ankle weight. Couldn't bike, but could in water..so swam laps and laps for upper workout and breathing...I took a vicodin before the exercises and has ice pack onknee during the leg raises..got me through,,,and I did gain noticible strength, enough so, that walking actually became easier for be as muscles do and will pick up the pressure we plce on our knees. Now, all the musxles know what to do...just a litle sorer to do them...but the programing stays with you. Internet has lots, I just wanted a personal touch..she taught me a lot of the muscle interaction...etc
