I am a 55 year old, reasonably fit person. I am due to have partial knee replacment to both knees in a months time, to help recovery, I wondered if anyone had been told of helpful exerxcise to do before the op, i.e, cycling, swimming or just any muscle strengthing exercises

Yes- I was told to bike and walk. I wish I had done more to strenghten my quads though (muscles right above the knees). When you have bad knees the quads get soft (I was told). Go online and look for quad exercises. Do not overdo it. Good luck. It's all in the attitude you go into it with.

Not that I would for one moment wish to deter anyone from undertaking exercise, the evidence is very much that outcomes are not effected by pre-op exercising at all. I have read many papers and all say pretty much the same. You can Google this for yourself.

I received a list from my doc of things to do.
1. Quad Sets: While sitting up in bed Slowly tighten thigh muscle and count to 10.

2. Squeeze buttocks muscles as tightly as possible while counting to ten.

3. With one leg bent slightly, push heel into bed without bending knee further. Hold a ten count.

4. Bend one leg. Keep the other legas straight as possible and tighten musclesa on top of thigh. Slowly lift the straight leg 10 inches from the bed and hold 2 sec. lower it, keep it tight for 2 secs and relax. Repeat.

5. Bend knee and pull heel towards butt. (Most painful for me)

6. Place a large can or rolled towel under leg. Straighten leg. Hold. Relax.

My surgery will be in 44 days. I started these exercises 3 days ago. They told me to start about a month before. I want to try to be in the best shape I can. Walking and biking for exercise is not an option for me right now. Very painful.

I hope this helps.

These are what I was told to do as well as "ankle pumps" which are done lying flat and simply pointing your toes toward you and then away from you. Next you trace a circle with your toes. You are going to be ready and have a much easier time of it. Keep it up every day after surgery especially stationary biking to keep knees flexible. Best wishes.
