Hello Everyone -

I have my surgery for THR of my right hip scheduled for November 16th. A little about me. I noticed in the past 4 to 5 years that I was slowing down. It was difficult to move and my range of motion steadily became restricted.

I made an appointment with my Rheumatologist explaining what I noticed and that I needed her help to figure out what was happening. After X-rays, bloods tests and an MRI. She found that I had AVN of the left and right hip as well as osteoarthritis in the lower back, hip, and knees.

The right hip is worse than the left so I was thinking to only go for the THR on the right hip. Has anyone had issue with both hips where one was worse than the other. Did you do one at a time? If so, how long were you able to go without having to do the other hip or did you have to do the other hip right away?

Thank you for the information,
Renee

Hello and welcome Renee! I don't have experience with both hips but I did just have a right THR. Many others will be along soon to help you out and offer their stories of multiple THR's and bilaterals...you've come to a great place! Everyone here is very welcoming and helpful. Best of luck and please keep us updated!

Hi, Renee....welcome to BoneSmart. We have a number of folks on the hip forums who have had problems (or are having them now) with both hips. So I'm sure you'll receive some comments here very soon.

As for when you have them repaired....it's an individual decision between you and your surgeon. Some prefer to deal with one at a time, but others have had both done at once. You might do some reading in the hip forums (before surgery forum and after surgery forum). Some of the old threads there discuss different situations and describe some of our members' experiences.

Don't hesitate to post any time you have a question or concern. We'll be here for you.

Hey Renee welcome Im a knee but best wishes but I can there are some one here and doing terrific....So i wish you the best as well.........post anytime............)

Just wanted to welcome you.

My RTHR is scheduled for this Friday, the 16th. A surgery for a labral tear in February put me in serious pain and at the point where I have severe arthritis and can't put any weight on the right hip without wanting to scream. All that happened within 7 months. Am not happy with the original surgeon but that's another story.

Can't answer your questions but wanted to say Hi!

You get one hip (or knee) and you get two! It's often the way. And you can get them done one at a time or both together. Just need to find a surgeon who will.

Couple of words - make sure you choose a surgeon who does hips all the time, the more the better but 500 a year as an absolute minimum. Whatever you do, don't chose someone who does hips and a everything else. Last thing you want is a generalist!

Hi Renee' --my right hip was worse than my left but both were so bad that my decision to have bilateral THR was an easy one. My surgeon told me that there were many reasons not to have bilateral surgery--one was if your good hip isn't painful. As i said, for me, the decision was an easy one.
I think it is a truism that "you will know" when you need a replacement. I never even made an appointment to see a surgeon--my wife did-- but by decision time, I surely knew it was right for me.
