Hello folks! I had my RTKR done in May 2020. Then I had to have a knee manipulation performed in July 2020, because my progress of mobility was not at the level my PT therapist and Doc thought it should be be at that time. I continued PT for another 5 months. When my annual visit came up in May 2021, I still experienced stiffness, pain and decreased mobility, so I went for another round of PT for 3 months. I thought my knee felt better when it ended. Well, around February this year, my knee began to feel unstable, pain increased gradually, a burning sensation became noticeable, along the shooting lightning stabs in my RTKR. In June, just past my 2- year post op, I decided to see another doctor for a 2nd opinion. After x-rays and a bone scan I was told the hardware is loosening and a revision surgery is needed.
I thought I should also talk to my original surgeon, at least give him the news. Well, my original surgeon told me that PT will help strengthen my knee and surgery isn't necessary.
Folks, I'm confused. I know the pain I'm experiencing everyday, all day long. I know, the reason I agreed to get my knee replaced in the first place was to eliminate that excruciating pain. Now, I'm living with it again just 2 years later. Oh, by the way, I have rheumatoid arthritis and fiibromyalgia.
If anyone has been through this confusion and can provide some advice, I would greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

@AngelArt Hi and Welcome!

I‘ve moved your post to a thread of your own, so we can discuss, and you can get replies, specific to your situation. The previous thread you posted on has not been active for a while.

I‘m sorry to read that you are getting conflicting information about your knee.
In June, just past my 2- year post op, I decided to see another doctor for a 2nd opinion. After x-rays and a bone scan I was told the hardware is loosening and a revision surgery is needed.
If indeed your implant is loose, PT is not going to help it. Was this second opinion a revision specialist? X rays and a bone scan are good tests to do.

Oh, by the way, I have rheumatoid arthritis and fiibromyalgia.
@kneeper has RA, when she sees this tag, she come talk with you.

Here is a list of other members going through revision.

Best wishes as you consider your future options! :flwrysmile:

Welcome to BoneSmart, glad you joined us! :welome:
Sorry to hear you are having so many problem with your TKR, I would tend to trust your second opinion. You cannot strengthen yourself out of component loosening. Leaving loose components can lead to bone damage making any revision you have more complicated.

As Jockette suggested, be sure the surgeon you select for your revision is a specialist in doing revisions or complex joint reconstruction.

Same thing! My knee never felt right, and all my surgeon said was PT! 2 years later I am facing 2 stage surgery for an infection and loosening. I found a Dr who does revisions. I'm due August 22 for surgery. I'm terrified.

Hi AngelArt,
I’ve been lurking awhile. I am 9 months post op on right knee TKR and 4 months post op on left knee TKR. Both can be expected to heal more slowly because I have RA, but I too am very frustrated with the slow healing of my left knee. I se myself headed in a similar direction as you. My left knee has pain all the time. It just doesn’t feel like it’s healing as quickly as the right one. But having two to deal with may warping my perception of proper healing time. I’m not sure if there is a thread or area on the board for people with RA, but I’d love to chat with anyone on here about dealing with RA and replacements.

Brief background, I’ve had multiple surgeries (scopes) over the years on both knees since 1986, when the car accident that kicked off all of this fun happened.

I wish peace and comfort for everyone on here.
Cyndi

@Possumqueen Welcome to BoneSmart!

It’ll be great if you start your own thread in the Recovery Forum and tell us a bit more about your situation, your surgery dates, and which knee goes with which date. Our members are here to support you. Here's a link to Starting a new thread and posting .

Hello folks! I'm new to Bonesmart. Hopefully, I willreceive good advice on my current situation.
I had my first TRKR in May 2020. Then I had to have a knee manipulation performed in July 2020, because my progress of mobility was not at the level my PT therapist and Doc thought it should be at that time. I continued PT for another 5 months. When my annual visit came up in May 2021, I still experienced stiffness, pain and decreased mobility, so I went for another round of PT for 3 months. I wanted to believe my knee felt better when it ended. Well, around February this year, my knee began to feel unstable, pain increased gradually, a burning sensation became very noticeable, along the shooting lightning stabs in my RTKR. In June, (just a month past my 2- year post op), I decided to see another doctor for a 2nd opinion regarding my knee. After x-rays and a bone scan were ordered, the 2nd opinion doctor informed me the knee hardware is loosening and a revision surgery is needed.
Out of courtesy, I met with my original knee surgeon to past on the news. Well, my original surgeon told me that PT will help strengthen my knee and surgery isn't necessary.
Folks, I'm confused. I'm the one dealing with the pain everyday, all day long. I know, the reason I agreed to get my knee replaced in the first place was to eliminate that excruciating pain. Now, I'm living with it again just 2 years later, which it feels worst. Oh, by the way, I have rheumatoid arthritis and fiibromyalgia.
If anyone has been through a similar situation and can provide some advice, I would greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

@AngelArt
I merged your newest thread with your previous thread, since it’s a very similar post/thread. It can get confusing with more than one thread about the same topic. Only one threads keeps things together nicely for you.

How can I find my threads and posts?

Best wishes on your continuing journey! :flwrysmile:

Surgery set for the 22! Had my pre op blood test, primary and cardio clearance and medically induced stress test. Really not looking forward to these upcoming surgeries, but I've no choice.

l just finished up the 2 stage revision surgery for infection and it is grueling ! l had my leg in a full brace for 3 months , most of the time it was no weight on the leg . l also had 6 weeks of IV therapy that l did at home . then finally got the final surgery done about 7 weeks ago . l finally feel somewhat normal again . My revision surgery started on April 19 , never did l think that l would be laid up like this all spring and summer !

If the hardware is lose the only option is a revision.
Well, my original surgeon told me that PT will help strengthen my knee and surgery isn't necessary.
I suggest you don't return to this surgeon. They are not being realistic. No amount of PT will correct lose hardware.

Surgery was a week ago. 4 days in hospital. I have my pic line and use a vancomyacin ez pump twice a day. Dilauded and gabapenton for pain. I can walk around using a walker, but that's about it right now. Pretty intense pain after about 4pm in the day. Up until then, its tolerable. My knee sounds like gravel under tires. Incision burns and throbs. But....every day has been better. Trying not to put too much weight on it. Leg immobilizer for 6 weeks. Getting the thing to stay up is near impossible! I've ordered a smaller one, I think this is too big. Infectious disease Dr and surgeon appt already made.
