Tibial Plateau Fracture Post tibia surgery

That hardening feeling is more than likely swelling. Taking it slow and easy is definitely the best thing for your leg in these early days.

What I have found is that my leg seems to harden as if it’s wrapped in a strap and there is quite bad pain just below my kneecap.
When you say that your leg seems to harden- does it actually go hard or is more like a tight band feeling?
The tight band feeling is very common with knee recovery and worries a lot of people. I think it is probably due to the knee being quite a small joint and even small amounts of swelling making it feel really tight, hard and really uncomfortable.

Thankyou Ealing’s gran . It is good to know that is normal . I have made a descision to do a slower approach to the weight bearing. I feel it all went too fast straight away. It is so difficult when you don’t know what is good or bad . I am at exactly 8 weeks since operation . I have to tell the physio what I have decided and I know they are the experts but I do feel I also need to listen to my body . I am so glad I found this forum it is such a support .

Happy Two Month Anniversary, rocker!

Good for you! Stick to your guns, it's your body and you're the one who deals with the pain of physio sessions that are too aggressive.
Enjoy the rest of the week!

Hi all. Just going to post an update . I hope it will help anyone unlucky enough to have the same injury. So I am now on crutches which is much better and a very positive move. The physio I feel made an error by 2 days after my first attempt at weight bearing pushed me to put all my weight standing on my leg. Since then every thing has been stiffer , more swollen and some pains which I didn’t have so much.
Luckily I see a different physio every now and then who thinks I have over exercised. I would like to know what you think if my regime and if you feel I am doing enough. This is week 9 since op. I do a few exercises in bed then take pain killers. Usually 2 paracetamol sometimes with 2 ibrobrufen. I am walking for about 10 minutes at least every hour . I either lie on bed with leg elevated or sit in chair with leg down in between the physio told me to stop all the exercise as I was doing too much. My knee is still very swollen and no feeling when I touch a lot of it. Some of the metal wear sticks out . Any advice would really be appreciated.

I'm so sorry that first physio pushed you into doing too much too soon, @rocker, but glad to read that you have a different one now.

The fact that your knee is very swollen is a sign that you are doing too much. You've only been cleared for full weight-breaking for a few weeks. Listen to your new physio and give your leg time to heal from the trauma inflicted in that incident with the first one.

Don't be concerned about numbness -- that's completely normal after this kind of surgery. Many nerves are disrupted during the procedure and it can take as long as a year for nerves to reactivate from the trauma. For most of us, the numb area seems to shrink a little at a time.

Can you explain what you mean? Do you see the metal or does it just feel like there is a lump under your skin?

It’s not through the skin . It’s apparently a screw that is very prominent . I don’t get pain there . Thankyou for your reassurance about what I should expect. I think for me one of the worst things is not knowing what is right or wrong or what the future holds. I have gone from a loud confident person into a proper scaredy cat !!! This forum ahead been so fantastic for me . So Thankyou for your help .

I have another question as I am interested as to what you think. I decided to start checking my steps . So on Sunday I only did 350 and yesterday I did 1057
Is this good or should I be doing more or less ? Before my accident I averaged anything between 10000 and 20.000 a day . Dog walking etc .

What kind of direction has your medical team or your physio given you about step count, @rocker? If none, perhaps you could reach out for guidance?

When I was recovering, I was encouraged to take frequent short walks rather than one or two long walks, So I tried to log 200 steps each hour that I was up and about during the day. As I gained stability and stamina, I started to increase the length of the walks.

The best approach is to build up gradually. If you did 1000 steps yesterday, and you don't have increased pain today, try to repeat that again today and tomorrow. If that seems okay and doesn't increase your pain, add another 100 steps the next day and follow the same approach. A little bit at a time!
