Well my post op visit went well. My doc said to quit worrying about the limping that it would get better with PT, to be patient, walk as much as I can, ride my bike, and swim. He said the new hip looked great. I am feeling better everyday, alot thanks to all of you guys. My energy is getting better to. My doc told my husband that if he could get me into the bathtub safely that I could soak in a tub. It was wonderful, it worked some of the soreness out in areas of my body that I am not used to using. If any of u feel like you can take a tub bath, check with your doc and get someone to help you lower yourself into the tub. I slept better after a bath than I had since the surgery. I can also start driving next week, so good news so far, but I know I still need to be careful. I hope all of you are doing well and you all have a Happy Easter.
Angie

Hi Angie,

I love a bath! I remember I used to stay in there for ages, when the water went cold, I'd just let some out and add hot. In the house we have there is a tiny little bath that would only be good for kids. Even though I'm only as tall as a kid, it can be a bit tricky getting out without too much twisting and turning. I'm pleased to hear you enjoyed your bath and have one for me sometime. TA

Chris :)

Hi, Angie!!! So happy to hear your good report from the doctor. I know that eases your mind to KNOW that things are going well inside your body. It always helps to hear it from the doctor no matter how well you feel. And congratulations on getting that relaxing hot bath! Your hubby deserves a big hug for helping you and being such a caring guy. Give him one for me, okay?

Hi Angie -so glad to hear! I want to try a bath. How many days post-op are you? That's great that you can drive next week.

Jo -question for you. Is the driving restriction 6 weeks for either hip or only if it's your right hip? (I know every OS is different, but just wondering what the norm is).

Well, apart from the 'no bending above 90 degrees' restriction for hippies, the only other restriction for both hips and knees is that you're able to drive competently (i.e., not on heavy pain killers) and can do an emergency stop, etc.

Melissa, mine was the right hip and I started driving at 4 weeks. A friend had his right hip done a few weeks before me and he was driving at 3 weeks! Yup, every OS is different!

Thanks Karen. That is interesting. I'm t 4 weeks tomorrow and I feel strong enough to drive. However, I don't see the doctor until April 27th. He does now want to see me until 6 weeks and won't allow driving until the full 6. Just 2 more weeks. Guess I can do it! It's nice being chauffeured around!

The longer you can wait the better! I waited the full 6 weeks til I drove! It's DEFINITELY great to be chauffered! I'm always the ond that did all the driving anyway! You'll be fine! But when you ARE ready, go into an empty parking lot & brake hard a few times just to get back to the swing of things! :)

hey young m. I am 19 days post op taday. as far as the driving restrictions I don't know. I had a left THR, so I don't if that make a difference or not. Hang in there and good luck!!

Melissa, I was impatient to drive, too, especially since I had an anterior with the typically quick recovery. While sitting on the couch watching TV about 3 weeks post-op, I tried to replicate moving my foot from accelerator to brake very quickly (which is what you need to do in an emergency) and my thigh screamed for mercy! That convinced me that my OS, though young enough to be my son, was much wiser when he said driving had to wait until 5-6 weeks. On the plus side, I discovered this "exercise" was excellent practice and tried to do it every time I was sitting! :)

I will keep that in mind! Also, I know inward rotation is not "allowed" during the first 6 weeks, so maybe the gas to break action causes some abduction (adduction?) motion.

3 weeks!!! Its not that long! Then go in an empty parking lot and BRAKE away!!! You'll be ready then! :)

Adduct - move towards the centre line of the body (add to)
Abduct - move away from the centre line (abduct - to kidnap)

Melissa, I was like you, couldn't wait to drive. And my Dr. saw me at 4 wks and said ok. However, I did go easy and slow for the first run. You have got to abide by Dr's advice though on the small chance that you have an accident--the insurance could deny coverage. (you may already know that and sounds like you are being good anyway.)

The bath thing also was hard for me as I was dying to get into my jacuzzi. I also got the ok at 4 wks. I do think it is more about getting in and out and chance of slipping than anything. I did have hubby close by the first few times I took a bath--was a little bit of a feat lifting my right leg out of tub.

All in good time and hard to remember at this point until reminded.

Laurie

I drove to my doctors office on day 6 post op.......but I was uncomfortable. Two weeks post-op felt much better......it only hurt lifting my leg into the car.
