After talking with several folks locally who have had knee replacements, it seems they are still on meds several months post op. Specifically, I believe anti inflammatory medications. Is this standard? Are there folks out there that have had a knee or hip replaced a few months back and not on medications linked to the new knee or hip?
Thanks,
John

John,

I'm about 4 weeks post op from LTHR, so I can't really speak to your question, but my OS did tell me I should continue taking 325mg of aspirin for the blood thinning qualities for at least 6 weeks... I don't know about anti-inflamatories like ibuprophen, but as soon as my Lortab runs out, (about 3 or 4 more days), I will take the NSAID Allieve, (naproxin sodium) whenever I need some additional pain relief. Hope that helps...

Hey John,
I had my left THR on Feb 26th...Stayed on meds pretty heavily for pain and muscle cramps for about the first month. Then I slowly started weaning over to Darvocet and by about 6 weeks I was pretty much off that. An occasional pill for the next week or two and then was able to deal with the everyday pain here and there. I began taking a mixture of Glucosamine..MSM....Chondroitin....This was suggested by a Nurse and it helps the joints. I am on my second bottle. I guess I am better. But, it does not hurt to take it. There are different brands out there and you can talk to a Pharmacist, Health Food Store or a Nurse about it. That would be for later down the line. I am now at almost 5 months post-op....Hope that helps..Patty

Are you referring to pain meds or non-pain meds?

Some people - for a whole variety of reasons - will continue to require pain control for some weels post-op whilsy others will finish with them quite a lot more quickly. There's not a particular bench mark for that.

Patty and John,

I also take a daily supplement of Glucosamine and Chondroitin, "Osteo-Biflex", as well as a calcium supplement called "Os-Cal", a daily Omega 3 fatty acid, and a "Centrum" multivitamin. I would suggest doing all of the above for at least 6-12 weeks following bone related surgery, per my OS.

I was referring non-pain meds such as anti inflamatory meds.
