I see that some of you are doing therapy in the pool. I have a pool nearby and just bought a new suit. I know swimming will help my strength (and overall health) but are there special exercises you are doing in the pool in addition to swimming? Anything I can do in the pool to help with ROM?

Thanks!

You can do a number of exercises in the pool to help with ROM. Squats are a good one. So is sitting on a noodle and pedaling like you're on a bike. The thing is that the water gives you support and you can do things in the pool that would be more difficult on land where you had to support your whole body weight. It's great for recovery.

Hi Jill,

I have gone to hydrotherapy classes at our local Y for a year since my LTKR in Aug 08. People in the class have a range of ailments including knees, hips, strokes, etc. We do a range of exercises but our instructor is good at suggesting specific exercises for particular problems. For me they included walking, concentrating on placing the heel down, then the ball of my foot and then the toe. Also ham string curls and squats hanging onto the side of the pool.

If you have access to the "book" (Total Knee Replacement & Rehabilitation - The Knee Owner's Manual was written by orthopedic surgeon Daniel J. Brugioni, M.D. and physical therapist Jeff Falkel, Ph.D., P.T., CSCS.) there is a whole section of exercises in the pool or hot tub.

Good luck.

awwee, my most favorite thing to do was ride the noodle like a bicycle. About a year ago in class at the Y, a woman fell off her noodle and went under, ...was no big deal since she was in the shallow end, but now we're not allowed to do that.

Thank you, Vern! I will look up that book now. I wish I had known about it a long time ago (like 9 weeks...LOL.)

Pat I am laughing, but I also feel sorry for you not being able to ride the noodle anymore. I wonder if my pool has noodles...they must since they do swimming lessons.

I did alot of squats in the pool i was able to get real Far good luck i think you will enjoy it they also have the parallel bars in the water and i would move my feet like riding a bike but brought my knees real high..............) good luck

I think the Trams must be playing with my mind - what's this about sitting on a noodle? :sct:
I eat mine!

Have FUN!!! Sitting and peddling on a noodle really IS therapeutic!!! ((:0)

Jo, a pool noodle is a long foam tube that was originally designed for kids to play with when swimming. But (at least in the USA), they are now popular for adults too and frequently used for water aerobics exercises and pool therapy.

You put the noodle between your legs and sit on it. It keeps you afloat but leaves you free to move your arms and legs.

Here is a look at one....
