Hey fellow hippies,
We have a brand new YMCA in town & hubby & I joined after a pre-opening tour my 3rd week post-op. (Talk about comic--all these "fitties" and there's me on my walker, taking the elevator instead of stairs! :-)

Anyway, yesterday they began low-impact classes in a warm-water therapy pool (imagine a GIGANTIC hot tub with jets at one end). What a terrific session!! Admit to being just a bit sore today (which ibuprofen easily helped), but it was great! My OS was quite enthusiastic about any water exercises since they're easier on joints. If you're fortunate enough to have access to any type of program or facility like this, I HIGHLY recommend it!

BTW, I'm 9 wks out after anterior RTHR . . .

I have one about 7 min. away from me and it is new also. I am thinking it is a good idea but I thought I would wait till done with the Physio at the hospital but now I am not so sure that is the right idea. I am now just 8 weeks out..
Whats your thoughts on this Jo please...Carol

Carol, the primary issue would be whether your doc has said it's OK to be in a pool, which really hinges on healing state of your incision. My incision was closed with glue, so I was told to stay out of tub/pool for only 2 weeks post, though showers were OK immediately.

The nice thing about the water classes, besides being easy on joints, is that you can set your own limits. My instructor asked at the start if anyone had back, shoulder, etc. problems--I fessed up to a new hip--and she said just to let your body be your guide. Nothing you do should hurt. (Even though the only PT I had was during the 2 days I was in the hospital, judging by some of the posts I've seen here, most can't say PT doesn't hurt at least sometimes!)

I had my second class last night--it was a workout, but such fun. Looking forward to the next one tomorrow!

My OS says I can't get into a pool or hot tub until after my 6 week review (incision issues). But I'll guarantee I'll be in one the afternoon after I get my OK.

I got into a pool about 4 weeks post op of a right hip replacement. In no time I was swimming a mile. I really think that is where my great range of motion came from. I had not been a swimmer , but love exercise . It was the best thing I could do.
It was a major source of exercise for me for about 4 months.

I started aqua aerobics 3 weeks after surgery and found it fantastic exercise. We actually have a physiotherapist at our YMCA who can work with the gym instructors to set up a rehabilitation program at the gym but they often get people in the water doing specific exercises.

OK--forget what I said about not hurting! Different instructor yesterday, so different routine, including some pretty intense cross-country skiing-type moves. This morning I could barely walk--felt like I had a yappy rat terrier's jaws embedded in each calf! On the plus side--I TOTALLY forgot about my new hip!! So will I go back tomorrow--absolutely!

I have been doing water workouts shallow and deep end aerobics for about two years. They wanted me to do that to help with weightloss so they could do my surgery, it is deff the best workout and a lot of people dont believe its a work out but it really is.. I love it and now I can finally get my surgery yeahhh.lol
