Some of you know that I was an avid runner before surgery but plan on switching to cycling when I am able. In preparation I researched bikes and test road several that met my criteria. I wanted to make a decision before surgery so I could use the bike indoors on a trainer as part of my rehab.

I eventually chose a Trek 2.3 road bike. I ordered it before surgery and I picked it up yesterday. I can't wait to be able to start training on it!

On a related note. Has anyone had elliptical as part of their rehab? If so, what was the general timeline you experienced?

I had no formal PT, but when I had my post-op check-up at 5 weeks, my OS said using an elliptical was great--considered low impact.

Great. Thanks! I'm going to ask my therapist about it on Tuesday but it's good to hear others' experiences.

Hi Scott, The elliptical has been my exercise friend before and since I have had my RTHR last August 26. I started back on the elliptical at 5 wks w/my Dr's ok. I started at about 20 minutes on it and about 10 slowly on treadmill. Now at 8 months out I am on the elliptical upwards of 55 mins at a time and aim for 600 calories burned. Am sure youwill be far and ahead of me as I am 56 andhave never been a runner but am in good shape for my years. Anyway, I highly recommend this equipment as you can be as strenuous as youwant on it and yet is low impact.

Your bike is tempting. I just may have to consider after many years

Happy recovery!

Laurie

I got one of these before the surgery, it has been a life saver since.

Can't go as far as you can, but its waiting for me in my bedroom every morning. And I bet you can't ride yours while watching CNN... ;-)

wow i want you to be my coach, but i dont think i could keep up. i hear yall talking about miles. i dont even think i ever even set my sights that high. i just want to be able to get around the block. to get thru the store without the cart. to like going thru the mall. that really sounds fantastic. to think in a couple months i could do that when i've never been able to before really brings tears of joy.

That's great to hear. When I found out I was going to have surgery I stopped running (it was getting unbearable anyway) and switched to the elliptical the remaining several weeks before the surgery. I actually liked it pretty well and it gives a great workout. I bought it for my wife late last year and found out I really like it, too. Doesn't take the place of the great outdoors, but it's much more enjoyable than a treadmill.

Sounds like you are getting some intense workouts on it. 600 calories for 55 minutes is a very nice rate!

That looks like a nice machine!

Mdakota, You will be amazed at how much better you will feel. I too remember the pain of shopping. Towards the end I also felt a weakness in my hip and at times even worried that it would collapse on me. All that is a dim memory. Even at 8 months, I am finding that I am improving my gait and strength. Now I am alternating walking with my gym routine (elliptical, etc) as I do like to get outdoors and the weather is so good. All w/o pain. Now I just have to push away from the table a little and I would be in the best shape I have been in in years (but not really complaining, am so grateful that this surgery is available).

Take care.
Laurie

Laurie! Don't be tough on yourself! You've really been doing great! :)

Very nice ride. I did the trainer thing this winter. Pick up a bunch of bike videos or a trainer can be torture. A friend of mine has all the Tour de France on video and watches that. I watch downhill race videos. Without them - you may as well pull out your own fingernails. . .

NW Arkansas? You should pick up a mountain bike! Better for bone density. Less chance of getting pulverized by a guy in a chevy truck who thinks road bikers are "bonus points". . . .

Ellipticals are good. I think waited a few weeks before getting on one. They feel more risky than a stationary bike at first. But they burn some serious calories! (not as much as mountain bikes - additional plug ;-)

Thanks, Dave. One video came with the trainer I bought. I watched it and once section is a time trial, which looked like torture! I'll be on the lookout for others. That's a good idea!

I have some friends who are avid mountain bikers. I figure I'll slowly get into that as well. So many good areas to ride off-road around here. One of my buddies said he likes not being a target on the roads :)

I got to try mine out for the first time yesterday. Only went 15 minutes but it was great! Had to shift the handlebars back to not break the 90-degree rule but other than that it went really well. Here is a picture of my setup.
