I'm going under the knife and saws for my TKR on Tuesday Oct 7. I went to schedule my therapy sessions and they wanted to know when I wanted to start. Hum...Surgery on Tuesday, home on Wendsday, therapy on Friday? Anyway that's when I scheduled it, but I'm wondering just how I'm going to feel. Should I do it sooner or later.
How long did most of you wait to start physical therapy? I can always change it.

PT usually starts the day after surgery or the next. If your doctor uses a CPM machine that will be used as soon as you get to your room.

It sounds that only a day (considering they discharge in the morning) in the hospital a bit fast.

Will the PT be at home or will you be going to outpatient? I went directly to inpatient PT on day 4 of a BTKR and had PT/OT for 3 hours a day and used a CPM machine for 6 to 8 hours a day.

Hope that helps

Simon

I had my BTKR with each knee three days apart. I had PT in the hospital twice a day and a CPM for about eight hours a day. When I left the hospital, I began OP PT one week after my last TKR. I hope this helps.

God Bless,
Rick

Hi
I had my RNTK on a wednesday, the physio terrorist's were around on Thursday for leg lifts[yeah right] I was allowed home Saturday if I could so the stiars with the physio which we did,and I had my first session of physio proper on the Monday,my physio did say this was sooner than most but they had asked a wee bit more of me as younger tha most at 42 and quite fit[aoart from the knee's].
That was just on three weeks ago,now doing physio twice weekly for an hour each time.
And start my hydro midd October, scar permitting.
As all will tell you on here, its a relief to get home after physio put the offending knee up and slap on some ice,but every session does help no end.
Josephine I do have a question I have had to have some steri strips put back onto my sacr top third,as it has pulled apart, and its proving difficult to get it to heal,as my knee bends so well now it is breaking the scar back open, any ideas would be much sought after
ROM is now 135 nearly as good as the other knee so its doing okay

I had in-patient in hospital (I imagine everyone does), then home PT for two weeks, then outpatient PT for 4 months. No way could I have managed going to outpatient PT the first week (maybe the second)...

I was in on a Monday for surgery, the pt wild woman came in that afternoon, was there all the time (it seemed) on Tuesday and Wednesday and then again for one last round of torture on Thursday morning. Home Thursday at lunch and out patient PT Friday am as directed by the OS. Since then it has been 3 days a week for the past however many weeks (Surgery was 7/14). My OS wouldn't prescribe in house since we are ot "in town" (Anchorage. There is only one PT group he works with out here and that's who I see and they only do outpatient. There are others but they are not as highly held as the pne he deals with.
Best of Luck!
Marianne

Thanks for all the responses and GREAT advice from you all. It seems that my Tuesday surgery and Wednesday release seems quit quick. I did like the idea of not having to stay in the hospital for more then one night though. I guess if the pain is manageable I'm good with that. It also sounds like I won't want to go to PT as soon as Friday but will be rewarded for it in in the end in terms of Rom and not getting to stiff. I'm sure the first visit will be true torture, and I'm not looking forward to it one bit. My first goal is to make it to Saturday. I'll grab my laptop and keep you all informed. This better be worth it!!!
