I am a high school PE teacher and golf coach. I had surgery 1/8 and I am scheduled to return to work 4/20. Do you think I can pull this off. I think I'll be finished PT this week 4/3.

Welcome to the forum, Jack.

It's difficult to say....how are you doing now? One thing you should consider is starting back half days or with some type of reduced schedule. There are so many variables to each individual's recovery, there is no "one size fits all" answer. A lot depends on how active you are now and what your current meds and pain levels are. If you are still swelling....that could be a painful problem as it will likely be worse when you are back at work.

Let's hear more about where you are in recovery as well as what you are required to do at work (standing for long periods, walking, etc).

Welcome, Jack! It's really best to confer with
Your OS first, PT second......about returning to
Work! Good luck & keep posting! :)

Jack,
Welcome to the forum! I was a PE teacher K-12 for 5 years. For the past 28 years I have had my own family child care business. I did have help for 9 weeks post op after I reopened my business from my medical holiday of 1.5 weeks. You will just be over 3 months post op. I think going back full time will depend upon the logistics regarding when you return to work. I have a number of questions regarding what you will be doing that will have a bearing on your return to work.

  • What are you covering for activities during your classes upon return?
  • Do you have to do a lot of walking to the fields in this nice spring weather for your classes?
  • Will you be holding some or all your classes inside in the gym all the time?
Lots of walking will make a huge impact on how you feel after walking to a field and back and then checking the locker rooms for 'activity' while the students change......
Best,
Crystal

I wlll have 5 classes, 3 inside 2 outside plus a duty. I think I can handle the school day ok it's the after school golf that I'm concerned about. I leave for work at 6:45am and get home about 7:30 pm.

Jack,
How much walking are you doing on a daily basis now?
How much of a walk to and from the field is it? Uphill or downhill at all?
Coaching golf means being on the golf course, doesn't it?
Will you have a cart to use? That would make a huge difference for you......
I think going back full tilt to teach and coach is overdoing it by a very long shot.....
I am an avid skier. The OS told me in Oct 08 when I was 4 months post op, I was doing great and could consider skiing in February 09. I have skied 8 times since Feb 1st....... I picked my days to be out on the snow and to exert myself skiing. I know I do not have the stamina after 9 months for walks numerous times each day to a field for PE classes and to coach an after school sport of golf too.
Who is filling in for you? Can they take over part of the load? Possibly take over the coaching of the golf team? That is a long day to put in day after day after having your bones sawed and they are still healing........
Ask your OS what he thinks regarding your full day. You may possibly have the stamina, but I will be amazed if you keep up this pace between 4/20 and the end of school.... JMO
Best,
Crystal

Hi Jack. I had my surgery (RTKR) on Jan. 6 and went back teaching last Monday. I decided to just teach mornings for the first two weeks and that was a really good decision. I am not teaching Phys. Ed. however (except for one period a week), and that would be more difficult for sure. All the same, I am on my feet most of the time and moving around, going up and down stairs and walking long hallways. I have found that going back to work has been great for the most part. I forget about my knee (except to ice at recess) while I'm teaching and all that movement really keeps my leg limber. I amazed that my walking speed has increased and is getting back to my normal "get there fast" pace. I may tell a different story next week when I'm full-time and I have to do my exercises after a long day and try to get to the gym as well.

Can you possibly start part-time and work up to full-time after you've built up your stamina? Even one or two weeks would help.

The day you describe sounds a little ambitious to jump right into. Is there any way you can hold off on the golf, or get someone to cover for part of the time?

On the other hand, you may be quite fine after the first week and it may help your recovery. Of course, you'll probably be in bed by 8:00 for a bit!

Good luck,
Mag

Yes, you must have a phased return to work with a job like that. I think you would regret your present plans big-time.
