Hi had Patello femoral replacement 3 months ago knee still quite painful especially when I wake up in the morning

Hi, welcome to BoneSmart. Pain at 3 months isn't uncommon, as long as it's gradually improving there's no need to worry.

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now; they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)

3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.

4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these

5. Here is a week-by-week guide for Activity progression for TKRs
6. Access these pages on the website

We try to keep the forum a positive and safe place for our members to talk about their questions or concerns and to report successes with their joint replacement surgery. While members may create as many threads as they like in a majority of BoneSmart's forums, we ask that each member have only one recovery thread. This policy makes it easier to go back and review history before providing advice.

Hi and Welcome!

I had a Patellofemoral also, it took way longer to recover than it was promoted to. Just take things slow.

Hi how long were you off work for..I work for retail as merchandiser and went back after having OP done 2 1/2 months after

I’m retired, so that wasn’t an issue for me.

What was the date of your surgery?

1st July 2019..am.back doing 5 hour shifts but its swelling quite bad..

Do you stand a lot at work? It’s really early to have to stand a lot. Even after I was able to do some decent walking, it took a lot longer to be able to just stand still for any length of time.

I hope you are able to ice and elevate when you get home from work. I elevated all night long, and actually I still do.

Recovery from any knee replacement, partial or total, takes a full year for complete healing. That was a shock for me to learn, as I had read glowing reports of a quicker recovery for a partial. I expected a 2-3 month recovery. I’m 2.5 years post op and still in recovery mode, in many aspects. I’m not happy at all with my outcome.

Reread the recovery guidelines, there’s a lot of good information there.

Are you going to PT?

No not been referred to physio yet
That’s probably good, unless you honestly need help with a specific task.

Many of us have had more set backs than help from our PT.

I believe:

It’s not exercising that gets our range of motion back, it’s Time:

Time to recover.
Time for pain and swelling to settle.
Time to heal.

Our range of motion is right there all
along just waiting for that to happen so it can show itself.

In the general run of things, it doesn't need to be fought for, worked hard for or worried about. It will happen. Exercise as in strength training is counter-productive and in the early weeks does more harm than good. Normal activity is the key to success.

Had patellafemoral replacement 1st July 2019 was going fine and now it is aching really bad and swelling up all the time

@Rosielee you will notice that I have merged your two threads together as we prefer that members in recovery only have one thread.

This is for three reasons:
1. if you keep starting new threads, you miss the posts others have left you in the old threads
2. it often ends up that information is unnecessarily repeated
3. it's best if we can keep all your recovery story in one place so it's easily accessed if we need to advise you.

Please keep all your questions and updates on this thread.

In reading your thread it sounds like your knee has a history of swelling and pain. Are you icing and elevating - especially after a day at work?

Have you started any new activity recently that might have brought on this pain?
