I've noticed in the past few days that I am having pain under my kneecap. Is this normal? I thought that I shouldn't be having that same old pain, but if it is normal surgical pain, then I'll be okay with it. Thanks so much for all of your help!!

You're going to have pains all over the knee for awhile. They come and go. Sometimes you might strain the patella tendon that holds the kneecap in place.
Our legs have to get used to the prosthesis and the ensuing realignment..Like someone said awhile back," our knees didn't go bad over night and they won't get better over night".
Hang in there. Someday in the near future, you are going to marvel at how good it feels.

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that it is normal post-op pain! I was getting a little worried. I was afraid that I went through all of that, and the pain is still there!!!

Thanks again,

Yep, pain is normal----and so are funny noises. Our knees popped, clicked, and clunked during our rehab last winter. So don't worry when that happens! All part of the process!

My knee replaced last fall is still popping, clicking and cluncking, mainly on the stairs...It sounds like a bag of bolts sometimes....Anyone elses?

Hess, it seems that at this point in the recovery you just never know what's going to start hurting. I was feeling fine at PT this morning and as I was walking out the door and saying goodbye, I got this sharp pain on the outside of the knee. It's still bothering me a little but I'm sure it will be gone tomorrow when I wake up. I don't really need a cane these days but carry one whenever I have a decent distance to walk so that I'm prepared for some of these sharp pains.

My clunking comes and goes. There is not rhyme or reason that I've been able to figure it out. It may happen while I'm just walkin or on an eliptical trainer. It may not happen for a couple of weeks then go on for a couple of days. I tried to see if the position of foot had an impact. Nope..No pain involved though.

My knee used to pop really loud first thing in the morning when I did my heel slides first thing before I got out of bed. It didn't hurt, but the sound made me flinch and the first time it happened Scott was convinced I had just broken something in my knee it was so loud! Lasted for a week or so, then stopped.

I also just remembered when I was scared to death I was going to need a THR because my hip hurt so much.....All those body parts are connected and need time to sort themselves out with your new knee and alignment.

We've all been so grateful to Jo for her reassurances that even though we felt like the Tin Man in need of an oil can-----that we were all going through normal recovery tweaks and twangs.

thanks again and again and again Jo!

I am trying to do my knee bending on my own so it isn't so bad in PT but I get to about 85% and it is like in a vice. Locked up and won't go any further. Pain on both sides of the knee and all the way up to the hip. I can't seem to get it to relax and go any further. Does this side normal? I am wondering if my inactive prior to surgery has really effected my muscles and tendons to the point they don't have any stretch to them and that is what is going on, not a problem with the knee even though the knee seems to be locked in when I get to the 85.

Possibly the Iliotibial Band. Mine was tight as a bow string after surgery.
Google the IT band and it will show you several stretches for it. Don't look for immediate results.
You are probably right about the inactive period prior to surgery effecting your flexibility.
I had practiced martial arts for years and was pretty flexible before the knee started going down. Fortunately, I'm getting most of it back
