Hi folks,
I'm having pain on the outside of my unoperated side, starting at my front jeans pocket and then radiating down the side. Its enough to take paracetemol or ibuprofen, and a bit annoying. I think its soft tissue and can ache even when I'm sitting or lying....In some ways it feels like a stinging kind of pain, but its internal and then sometimes its a dull annoying ache:sct::sct:

Anybody got any ideas. When I spoke to the pt she thought it might have come from the lumbar spine? That wasn't based on her examining me, I was wondering about bursitis?? What are the symptoms of this?? I also wonder if its the IT band?? Talk about self diagnosis

Any thoughts ?

Hmmm, Its possible Ron that I've just aggravated the inevitable....Left THR??? I don't really think its that, it feels more like soft tissue agro ....at the moment its mostly on the side, in the muscles that run between the hip and the knee, but closer to the hip than the knee, and then at other times its right up around the Butt muscles surrounding the left hip.....sometimes it feels like what I imagine a torn muscle feels like, but no where near as bad as I imagine a torn muscle feels like....it sometimes feels kind of stingey, or stretched tight or....?

Hey Ron, isn't it good to see you giving THR a "thumbs up" only 2 weeks after your surgery. Good on You....keep up the good work!

ITB band for sure! Are you still having pt? Get your physio to do some deep massage and show you how to do the stretches. There's also a thread in the Information Centre here that would be useful.

Hi Rachel...

Since I haven't had my surgery yet you have to take what I say with a bucket of salt.
But my "off side" has pain which the doc says is likely from compensating for the hurt side and he said I would probably continue to have some discomfort on the "off" side after the surgery because it has to readjust again.
Embarrassed to admit that I have been sort of denying how much pain I was in due to being so scared of the surgery and thus probably let it go on much longer than a normal (non-chicken:blush:) person would have. So now there may be some extra stuff to overcome.

I really don't know if that could be the problem you are experiencing or not.... just tossing it out for what it's worth.
Hope it's something easy for you to get passed.

I suspect that if you replace a joint, add about an inch or so, and then exercise like crazy (after being a sedentary sloth for 20 years) that other parts of the poor old anatomy are sure to object!!!!.. My pt reckons she could work on me for 3 hours a day....where do you start....hips, knees, back, shoulders, arms ankles.......? I need a fulltime physio.....I also need a money tree!

Oh and incidentally Shawnee.....everyone tries to avoid surgery for as long as possible...after all who really likes the idea of having major surgery, chopping out a joint or 2 ..... you're not a chicken.....you're brave and courageous because you are now facing the fear of pain and inconvenience and of anaesthetics and of dependency......

My ITBands settled down quite a bit now, I suspect that getting out in the garden, pruning, raking, weeding etc has loosened it up a bit......incidentally gardening was another post surgery first!

Just thought I'd say that this post was really useful to me. I had a hip resurfacing in January, felt fine after three months or so and then started getting bad back pain and pain in my groin and side of leg/buttock on the unoperated side. I had some physio and now, a couple of months later, it's much better. I've found that rest and some gentle exercise has helped most. Further x-rays haven't shown significant damage in the affected joint.
