After a TKR 15 months ago, I now have sharp pains on both sides of the TKR. It's very painful to the touch as well as inside the knee. Xrays did not show anything. Dr gave me anti-inflammatories and told me to "lay low" for one week.

I have a trip coming up on May 1st for which there is no trip insurance. So, I'm wondering if anyone has had a similar experience this long after a TKR. If so, is it possible to get a steroid shot and can you wear a brace over a TKR. Thank you!

Hi and Welcome to Bonesmart!

I am going to tag @Josephine
our forum administrator and nurse director to address your concerns.

I will leave you our Recovery Guidelines. Each article is short but very informative. Following these guidelines will help you have a less painful recovery.

Knee Recovery: The Guidelines
1. Don’t worry: Your body will heal all by itself. Relax, let it, don't try and hurry it, don’t worry about any symptoms now, they are almost certainly temporary
2. Control discomfort:
rest
elevate
ice
take your pain meds by prescription schedule (not when pain starts!)
don't overwork.
3. Do what you want to do BUT
a. If it hurts, don't do it and don't allow anyone - especially a physical therapist - to do it to you
b. If your leg swells more or gets stiffer in the 24 hours after doing it, don't do it again.
4. PT or exercise can be useful BUT take note of these
5. At week 4 and after you should follow this
6. Access to these pages on the website

Sorry to hear you are having problems. One thing you never mentioned: you said your knee was painful to touch but is it painful to do anything else? Like weight bearing, walking, doing stairs or bending your knee.

I'd also suggest that these covert symptoms might be better explored using a bone scan. I have a loose implant which never showed up on two different xrays but it did show on the bone scan.

Agree about getting a bone scan. Went fo 8 months and traveled with a loose implant but never had the symptoms of being painful to touch. Start up pain, first steps and when I stepped wrong we’re my symptoms. Kept my muscles strong.. Good luck.

Hello @sitka53

Please will you tell us the full date of your knee replacement and which knee it is, so we can make a signature for you? Thank you.
