Hi, I had a total hip done almost 2 yrs ago.The hip feels great but for the last yr. I have had increasing pain in my knee going down into my shin.I have had xrays mris and they have not revealed anything my pain dr has treated me for nerve pain by epidural steroid injections which helped some unrelated lower back pain but I still have this pain and its there no matter how much medicine I take.I am currently on 25mcg fentanyl every 48hrs and 10mg norcos and it still isnt enough to wipe it out but makes it tolerable without them i wouldnt even get out of bed as it hurts so much that I have gotten stranded in the grocery store until it subsided a bit.does anyone else have any of these symptoms any suggestions would be appreciated.I am getting so tired of being medicated 24/7 I feel like such an addict

Schwa,

I had a total hip in June. It is doing great. I have had knee pain for years and do have stage 4 chondromalacia. I am currently getting hyalgan injections in my right knee. Cortisone in the left. I have also had shin pain for a long time in my right knee and recently some nerve sensations in the left. Last week I mentioned this to my knee/hip doc. He said can we just blame it on Dr. Costigan? Dr. Costigan is my spine doc.
Yesterday on a stationary bike my right knee had a lot of tingling. Anyway all this is nerve related, but not as bad as what you describe.
I do get epidural injections in my spine, but never thought I had sciatic nerve problems until this week.

I know this is not much help, but I am going to ask my hip/knee surgeon again on tuesday. I am scheduled for thoracic and neck injections on the
29th and will try to ask my spine doc before I get knocked out.

I will post again after tuesday.

Oh and welcome to this wonderful site

Schwa - welcome to BoneSmart - does the xrays and scans you had include a straight xray of your knee joint? And this has been declared ok by a surgeon? Because it sounds to me like you have o/a of the knee. Possibly early changes which might not be picked up except by an experienced knee surgeon.

The alternative is, does your pain increase with walking and get better with rest? If so, have you been reviewed by a vascular surgeon?

Just some thoughts that come to mind.
