THR Pain developed after 14 months<

Can't figure out how to quote just a bit - thanks @Marvy - did they just take the screws out or was it a whole new cup ? I'm not sure there's much bone left for me to have a revision easily...
When did your pain start, and did it gradually get worse? Would it be seen on an MRI (reluctant for more X-rays, and especially not a CT as vast amounts of radiation to add to my many many X-rays over the years since I was 7)

Scratch the first question - I see they did more than just take out the screws. My, you've been through a lot!

@Sunnysept - they removed the screws in addition to replacing the ball and liner (which they have to do since they dislocate your hip to get to the screws). The cup was grown into the bone so it was solid and did not have to be replaced.

I can't really remember now when the pain actually started as I knew something didn't seem right from the start, but I kept thinking that it was normal and part of the process of having a hip replacement. It wasn't until I started walking longer distances that I knew that something was wrong. The pain was always there and got worse if I walked "too far". It was painful getting in/out of a car, etc.

In my particular case, if I hadn't had the CT (which was the first non-xray imaging done), no one would have ever mentioned the screw. Like you, I didn't want any additional tests, but it was almost a case of "I had to".

I do hope they are able to figure out what the issue is... Please keep us posted!

Surgeon says all ok but then he did tell me he'd put a 28mm head in (at least three times, each time I questioned him over the past year). This made me rule out the fact that the implant could be too large until I got my National Joint Registry details and he's put a 32mm head in!!
Is that a big one and does it look big on the xray?
Honey, don't obsess about this. It is, after all, a mere 4mm difference! Not even worth mentioning.

If they really need to remove the screws, of course they have to remove the cup first as they are behind the cup!

Look at this "How To" - it explains it all. How to use the quote feature

Thanks @Josephine - got quoting sussed now!

Ok, I shan't obsess about the size of the cup etc, but do you have any more ideas about what is causing my pain - i've never had groin strain in my life before (never done enough exercise to have caused it :heehee:), but if it was just mere groin strain and nothing to do with the cup/screws/implant problems/loose implant etc, what should I do or not do in order for it to go away? Will it go away if it's standard groin strain? And how long might it take - surely it would be better after 8 weeks?:sorry:
Any idea what the impact type vague pain might be also?

Thanks. @Josephine . Have done that several times and have followed your recommendations except for the one about paracetamol as I had a problem with my liver last year due to diclofenic /flucloxacillin so try to avoid medication as far as I can now.
I just want to know if it is actually regular groin strain how long it might take to get better...like I said I've never had it in my life before so don't know anything about it.

So I’ve been re reading the links on bursitis and psoas pain and now the pains (well some of them) have settled/changed slightly/moved on, I think I may have a slight bursa (my scar on the side is starting to get very tender in a way that it wasn’t before - I can still lie on it tho) and my psoas is definitely irritated hence the groin pain .
So what do I do now? Who do I go see? Surgeon wasn’t interested in my psoas pain and I did tell him my scar was tender a month ago although it wasn’t as tender as it is now.
How do I get these things diagnosed and treated and would the bursitis if that’s what I have, ever get better on it’s own?
Tried massaging the psoas but I’m blowed if I can find it on my own .

Hi there
What about your primary care physician if you aren't getting any satisfaction from your OS?
Consider making that call in an effort to get some answers. Let us know how it goes...
Wishing you comfort and relief. Stay in touch.
@Sunnysept

Been to my GP. They haven’t a clue what it is. Been to an osteopath, a chiropractor and a physiotherapist already in search of answers. Getting expensive. Recommended going back to my surgeon but couldn’t mark it as urgent and therefore it will be months before I see anyone . Trying to work out if there’s anything I can do for myself .

I'm sorry you're stuck, not knowing which way to turn. I wish you weren't hurting.
If none of the above feel your situation is urgent, you may have to wait until you can see your surgeon again. In the meantime I wouldn't engage in the exercises. Try gently massaging the area that hurts and ice for pain relief. Not sure what other options you have at this point. Hopefully it begins easing in the interim. Please keep us posted.
I hope you have a nice week!
@Sunnysept

I had similar pain on side and I went to a pain management doctor ..He injected into Bursa and it helped. Like you, the surgeon seemed uninterested in bursitis..He actually told me he had no idea why I was having pain on side..
The pain management doctor examined me and made the diagnosis right there.
He is a physical medicine and rehabilitation specialist .... triple board certified in physiatry, electrodiagnostic testing and pain medicine. Perhaps you can look for someone with this background.
I have pains all over the hip area. And I'm frustrated and think something is wrong..No one has said that to me..just a feeling I have. It's hard to look on bright side when you have pain everyday.

Thanks for all your comments. I’ve got lots of odd pains. Nothing when I’m sitting. Nothing upon standing . Groin pain when lifting leg. A bit of groin pain when walking. When I try and run, you know to catch someone up, my leg hurts around the knee, around the thigh and about the level of the end of the stem, all around from front to anterolateral, difficult to pin point. Side of thigh tender, not over the trochanter at all, but a bit lower by about 2inches, more thigh. And I have clunking feeling and sound which I’ve had since about the 3 month mark after I’ve walked for about 15 minutes (ITB band? Feels almost like my joint is connected by an elastic band and separating and coming back together again, but with no pain).
Interestingly, I have more pain in my groin when I wake up in the mornings than at the end of the day; I would have expected it to be worse at the end and not better! Wonder if that gives any clue as to what might be causing all of this?
I had a period where I had sacrum pain, thought I might be about to disclocate because of severe pain along with the groin pain, but that all seems to have subsided now.
Going back to the doctor on Wednesday but he’s not going to be able to do anything. I guess it’s just watching and waiting as I have not real clue what’s going on. I’m hopeful it’s just muscle pain, but I really was ok pain wise for the first year. Groin pain so reminiscent of how I felt a couple of years before I made the decision I had to go for replacement . Very fed up.

Where exactly was your bursa? Was it on the bony bit of the trochanter or a bit lower down? Mime is lower down, if that is what it is. So sorry you’re having problems too. It is so frustrating isn’t it? I do feel that for you, though, it’s still early days and everything could well be fine, given time.

I'm sorry. Best of luck with your doctor's appt on Wednesday.
I hope the visit proves worthwhile.
Let us know what you hear, if you care to share.
Hugs :console2:

@Sunnysept The pain was near the bony trochanter area and the injection helped.. But honestly , the entire thigh is sore when I touch it. I can't imagine this going on any longer. I feel like my whole life is Hip-centric..either icing or doing stretches. I use to go to gym but I froze membership, pre surgery..I'm afraid to unfreeze it..I'll go back and it will be a pain- fest and I'm not sure if I can re-freeze. Good Luck at Doctor..I'm really a bag of Complaints and not much fun , lately.
Biggest mistake I ever made...

On my, I really hope we haven't made a mistake getting a new hip. I was diagnosed with bursitis today. I was prescribed a steroid anti-inflammatory drugs to take for 2_weeks and PT 2x per week for 4 weeks. I had my surgery 6 days after you, so we are on a similar journey. My strength comes from the Lord, so I'm not giving up just yet. Let me know how your getting on. Keep praying for pain free days ahead.

An update - I did go to my doctor who said she could refer me back to the orthopedic dept but no guarantee which doc I would get and it may take months as deemed not urgent. I'm trying to find out if there's anyone in the Glos/Bristol area who is well renowned for revisions/complications as I think I might have to pay for a one off consultation.

My pain been morphing a lot. Mine started with my back which I put out (opposite side) back in August. Prior to that everything was going great apart from some odd "stem" pains which I realise now, thanks to @Josephine (thanks) were ITB issues and since I've been rolling the band those have completely gone.

The only thing I'm left with for more than two months now, is groin pain. It's not awful but it does impede my life. Walked my daughter around Birmingham uni on a tour last week and it's a bit hilly so I was in a lot of pain doing that. Took me right back 18 months to before I had my replacement. That wasn't a good feeling. Walking on the flat is fine, but hills and steps are a no no.

I've stopped all other exercise apart from walking, but I really don't know what to do now. I feel like there should be something other than tendon release or steroids open to me. Any ideas anyone?

I wake up with the pain in my groin so it's not just exercise induced. I can understand the there's inflammation in there - bit like when you bite your cheek you keep on biting it because it's so swollen. I guess the groin pain is like that - I'm guessing its psoas but is there anything else it can be? Pain just centred around R2FT & V.

Au contraire! You have that wrong, my friend! In the morning is exactly where the previous day's activity will show itself in pain!

The spot you indicate is where you will have Psoas pain which, if it doesn't respond to pain meds and suggested stretches, may well require a psoas release which is a small nick in the muscle where it is beg irritated by the cup.

Thanks - do you have anymore suggested stretches for this please?
