Hi
My Dad has had 2 Oxford Knee replacements and in July 2005 a full knee replacement.
Since then he has been in constant pain all the time. He carried out his physio, did the at home excercises etc.
He has had surgery last month to check for infection which there was not, and they removed part of the bone to test.
It looks like the bone has small holes in it.

The surgeon say there is nothing wrong and they don't know what to do, my dad has become depressed and can not walk, sleep, or even watch tv due to the constant pain.

Has anyone else had or know of similar ??

Thank you

Hi, I am 45 and just had my 3rd knee surgrey this past Feb. and was in the hospital for 4 days. The first 2 were just to clean up the loose stuff and to fix tears and then I had more troble,I have all of this done within 6 years! I had bone on bone and just severe pain so he decided to go ahead and do the partcial knee replacement on the med. side since the kneecap and outer side wee still fine,I went to PT 3 times a week for 4 months and all and now I am in more pain and discomfort then I ever was,I went to the doctor last week for a appt. and he is saying now he thinks the plastic caps they put in might be to big or the wrong size!I can't bend my knee like I should be able to and if I sit longer then a few minutes I am so stiff and have so much pain tha tI can't walk with wanting to go after the doctor! Now he wants me to come back in Sept. to se ehow i am doing and he said he might have to do a 4th surgrey and replace the caps or just take them out.but then I will have to the PT all ove again!I wished that I would of never had the replacement done but I have a 6 year son.Hope this helps and I hope your father gets better.Thanks.

Dear Lisa,

Who says you have to go to the same guy? I had my ankle replaced in Dec 2005. It has not been a good experience, and by the thrid or fourth week out I had decided to find someone else next time I had work done on the ankles. I pestered him into giving me a script for an MRI, the results of which I promptly took to a different specialist. There I got a whole different perspective along with a different idea of what we can do. I think more patients need to remember that they are the boss, in the end, and if the doctor isn't doing it, find another one.

Also, some doctors won't touch someone else's troubled surgery, but some on the other hand are happy to try to help fix problems. Maybe you could go to a different knee surgeon and see what he says. Good luck.

Absolutely, amyk. I am a great advocate of the second opinion and I have not yet met a surgeon who is unwilling to try and help a patient in need, what ever the source of their trouble. However, there are surgeons who have becomne specialists in revision surgery of all sorts within their field, whether it be hips, non-union of fractures or even just failed carpal tunnel decompressions. The trick is to find the one who specialises in whatever it is that ails you. For your father's knees, lisa (albeit you posted over a year ago) I would seek out someone who specialises in knee revision. Also, it sounds like he might have osteoporosis.

Absolutely- get a second opinion or third! My knees are Stryker Brand and supposed to last 30 years, so I should never need to replace them again. Good luck.
