Packing for hospital...must take items?

Maybe I am not very modest! I figure the folks in the hospital could care less what my body looks like and frankly, I don't care if they see me naked or not. That is not to say that when in the hospital I am immodest, I just don't think privacy is as big an issue as maybe, getting your meds on time.

When they prepared me for surgery, I was told to take off everything, and put on the gown, booties and hair net thingie! That was it. I assume they kept the gown on me during the surgery.....but I will never know. Frankly, I could care less. There were no funny faces painted on my body, so I guess they didn't have fun at my expense.

Commando is the word. :wink::shk::thmb:

Well, I hope I have a few like Josephine watching out for me and my "neverminds":D but like others have pointed we'll never really know what is said or done!!! I'll just have to put my faith in the professionalism of the group working on me.

Hurray! I've limped home from my last day of work before the surgery on Tuesday. Lots of well wishing from co-workers and the library patrons, and one kind gentleman had to make the "when do you go under the knife" comment? I'm so very ready...just a little ripple of nerves in the tummy occasionally.
You're comments are so fun to read!!!!

Whenever I've had surgery, they put the catheter in after you get put under. How would they put it in if you are wearing undergarments? I find this topic interesting because it's usually Americans that are considered overly modest compared to Europeans.

Yep! Definitely a bunch of prudes in the US! For sure!!!! (:)0)

I didn't find any funny faces but I did find some kind of electrode left on under my breast meaning somebody had to LIFT my breast to put it there!!...
I definately got over the modesty thing when having to use the bedside commode :)

I didn't get any panties either but after viewing a similar procedure to mine on orlive.com I think I got some kind of plastic wrap :)

Whatever happened was definately worth it. I wish you all the best on Tuesday. Spoil yourself over the next few days...
Bless you,
Sheri

Hi there fellow-hippie,
You are in for the treat of your life this coming week! Imagine waking up and realizing your excruciating pain will no longer be haunting you! I had my RTHR done on Nov 30, and I have NO regrets...only joy and anticipation of more of the good life ahead of me with my new hip.

Wear loose-fitting yoga pants and layered clothing in the morning of your surgery...also some slip-on flat sketchers. I wore the hospital gown the whole time except when it came time to leave. Remember, you will have all kinds of tubes in your arms, and the staff needs access to your veins for frequent blood-drawing. They are good about bringing warm flannel blankets upon request for the chills that come and go. Also, the staff supplied me with socks that had no-skid designs on them for use navigating the hallway or walk to the commode. I brought a comb and some facial lotion and toothpaste and toothbrush with me and used all of them. I wish I had brought my own body wash as the sponge baths are done with hospital grade squirt soap. Also, the hospital is noisy and you may end up with a roomie who, like mine, snored so loudly that I was nearly to the level of road rage--I asked for earplugs, and the aides supplied them. I brought books but found my concentration did not hold together for that kind of reading; mostly, I slept, text-messaged and went on the computer (I had my parents bring me my mini-laptop on the second day). The hospital did not supply a wireless connection, but I brought my own usb modem stub and a signal was not a problem. I even posted on this site while I was still in the hospital!

I didn't wear the yoga pants during my stay as I felt my bandage/stitches seemed to snag on the fabric--very unnerving. Plus, when you need all your concentration to get to and then onto the commode, you don't need the extra step of pulling down your pants! Just being able to whip-open that gown was a nice relief. Bring something you like to snack on--also, you can make requests that are not on the menus they show you prior to ordering your next set of meals. The last night, I ordered a cheese burger and some steamed asparagus--neither of which were listed on the "menu." You can also request sodas or juice throughout the day and night; it might not be a timely delivery, but your request will be honored.

Most of all, enjoy the early days of your new hip! You will be tired and stiff but not in arthritis pain--I know at this point, that reality is difficult for you to imagine...but it is going to happen, and you are going to be the new YOU!

Best of luck to you and may you soon become another one from The Other Side!
Cheers,
Patrikya

At this point......who cares? Just feel good and start getting relief! You know what the ob gyn says to his wife.....ummmm, you get the picture!!!! LOL! (:)0)

Good luck! And don't worry! The drugs will take over!!! (:)0)

I bought knickers (panties) 3 sizes too big to wear in hospital.

At my clinical education workshop today they recommended getting some large loose fitting underwear for post surgery - especially if you were a hip! I missed that last year.

Dear Bonesmart Bunch,
Well, I'm packed for the big day tomorrow! In my little suitcase on wheels , there are several LARGE undies for easy pull-on!! Also, soft comfy loose loungy items of clothing/pjs to sleep in and move in, probably more then I need, socks for my cold feet, new slippers, the usual stuff to wash up with, a portable Cd player and audio book, earphones, & cellphone. There will probably be more stuff I throw in just before I go because I tend to do that!! I'll let hubby,Paul, haul the bag.
I'm adding in a bunch of patience, a sense of humor, a good foundation of faith in my Lord, a thorough soaking of prayer, encouragement from family and friends,a good dose of determination, plenty of good advice from the bonesmart bunch and that should do it!
So Tuesday, I'll be off to the hospital 10:30 check-in and surgery by 12:30. See you on the Other Side IF I don't post again tonight!
