I went out to do some shopping today. Was in fine fettle and skipping along from shop to shop. Had visited about three and then went to the supermarket for milk and stuff. I was just approaching the store when - BAMB! - that old 'grit in the shoe' thing hit my knee. I was struggling - how I could have used a pair of crutches right then! I was leaning on walls to help myself put one foot in front of another. A man, must have been 85, stood back to let me pass and the sympathy on his face - humiliating!

In the store I availed myself of the electric cart and got my supplies. just a couple of bags but told the cashier I would need help, someone to carry them out to my car. A young lady arrived and duly loaded herself with my shopping. I took the cart back and went to reclaim my deposit for it but when I got out of the cart - I found my knee was fine again! I was soooo embarrassed! I mean, how could I admit it?

So I 'pretend hobbled' all the way to the car. And the young lass was so helpful and kind. I felt awful!

Oh what an embarrassment!

Bless you! I've done that VERY thing myself. It jumps in making you virtually immobile...then it jumps out and your fine!

I hope it STAYS out! Good call on the pretending!

Ohhhh, Josephine! I can just imagine how you must have felt! And knowing that you are the Grand PooBah Queen Momma Nurse of all of us babies on the forum....that "caretaker" image to uphold and all!!! How difficult! But, I can honestly say, despite all the embarrassment, I am so very thankful that the pain magically went away. Maybe you just had that iddy-biddy bit of something in your knee float in where it shouldn't be for a moment. Here's hoping that NEVER happens to you again and it can just remain the funny story you shared with us. You are such fun!!!

Wow, a nurse and an actor!! I'm impressed.
Jo, my knee used to pop out before I had the acl rebuilt at I think my third or fourth op.
Hurt like crazy. I'd be holding onto the wall. Then it would pop and I could run..
Us knee people understand.
Of course you know you are eventually going to have to get it fixed.

Jo, Hope you are feeling better. I get the same way. I can be walking down the hall and get a severe pain in the knee, then it goes away and I get a horrible pain in the ankle or maybe it will be both at once......Just random pains outta nowhere. When I stand up, I never know what I'm gonna get. Just like a box of chocolates....

Hang in there. One day you'll be on the other side of the fence and we will be here to support you after surgery. Karen

Oh Jo, sounds painful. You know you really should make that appointment with the doc!!!Well done with the acting though. Hope it settles down again. Take care out there :)

Josephine, I'm sending up prayers for you right now. So sorry to hear about your experience. I had pains that would shoot up and down my leg from time to time, but never anything like you are describing. I pray this is not a regular occurence and that you'll be taking all the advice you so wisely provide to us!

God be with you and grant you good healthy knees!

Yes, working hard and sleeping 8 hours at night. I had a meeting Monday night and dog training last night, so no time to post. Good news is that my lab is ready to take his therapy dog test. I'm excited. We want to take him to libraries and schools and have kids read to him as well as take him to nursing homes and hospitals to cheer folks up. He is a love bug and really good with people. It will be good for me to get out with him, too. Plus I have to walk him every day and work with him on stuff from his training class (not required for therapy, but I want him to be the consumate gentledog). Nice to know I was missed! I'll be around as I am able. Saturday it is supposed to be 75 and sunny so my hubby and I are taking the dogs hiking - gotta get ready for my hunting trip in May. Love you!! Skeet

Congratulations to you and the dog. What a wonderful idea. I have seen patients with dimentia in the nursing home I worked in act perfectly normally when in the presence of both animals or babies and young children. Quite extrordinary.

Enjoy your hiking, sounds lovely. Love you too, Sue

Skeet, I'm wishing I was with you in the 75 degree weather this weekend. Don't think it's going to be quite so nice here. I'm soooooo ready for real spring!!! I just let the dog outside and noticed that there were clear spots in the sky and the temerature hasn't dropped (at least yet) like they had predicted, so I'm holding out hope that the "snow" in the forecast doesn't appear. I've had a pretty busy week and actually am looking forward to taking it a little easier this weekend. Need to get this swelling I'm having today outta here!!

Thanks everyone - you're such sweethearts!

Yes, Doug (sigh) I know I am. In fact I just made an appointment to see my doctor and have decided to change surgeons as well.

See, back in 2001 when my sister was in desperate (k)need (hehe) my present surgeon was THE knee surgeon at the Sunderland Royal Hospital. Well, he is a charmer and a great surgeon. BUT he's more of a hip man and though he did plenty of knees back then, they since took on a younger guy who is mustard on all aspects of knee surgery. Then another came and together they took over 90% of the knee surgery there.

Besides which, my sister had a VERY bumpy ride with both her TKRs and I am awfully jumpy about going into that ward as I kicked up such a lot of fuss about her abysmal post-op care. At least if I go to this other chap, I'll get one half of it right and will just have to put up with the other half. Boy! what choices we have to make, huh?

I can see why you wouldn't want to go into that ward..Do you think it will just be a scope or is it TKR time?

I hope a washout will buy me some more time. I know that surgeon number 2 will be more amenable to that which is another reason for the change.

Josephine, you bring up a point I have wondered about. If a TKR is inevitable within 2-3 years, why do a 'washout' or even a ACL repair? Why not go ahead and get it over with? I ask because my OS told me I needed an ACL 'scope job done on my other knee, which I already knew; its completely torn, but I had to wait because the TKR ate up all my sick time at work. I guess my point of view comes from maintaining equipment; why patch it if you can fix it?

Skeet, can you possibly talk your dog into giving Patti some therapy??....just sayin

I already got a monkey humpdeeeedumping on my knee, I do NOT need a dog doing it too, MISS thang!

O.K. Lil Sis, I surrender......for now.

Well, ACLs is a different story from TKRs, gat. Bottom line is, up to a certain point, you can't beat your own God-given knee. If you can eek a few more months out of it, I'll go for that! Plus there is the (possible) revision factor to be considered. A risk, not an inevitability, I know.

And why patch it if you can fix it? Because TKRs is not a fix it's a replacement. Like the old boy said "Ya knows, I've 'ad this 'ere broom for nigh on twenty years. It's had six new 'eads and two new 'andles but 'er's still goin' strong!"

Or is that joke a little too obscure?

My Harley has more manners than the monkey. He would never do such a thang! he is quite the gentleman. Patti would love him to pieces and vice versa.
