It was a busy and momentous weekend for me at 6.5 weeks after surgery:

1. I RODE A REAL BIKE ON SATURDAY! and

2. I graduated on Sunday and WALKED AND STOOD through the ceremony.

It felt SOOO good to ride a real bike, although my stamina didn't let us go too far. We're hoping to get out for a bit longer sometime this week. Riding a real bike is certainly different from the exercise bike! At first it was like I couldn't balance, steer and get my knee loosened up all at once. John was holding me upright like I was just learning and keeping me balanced. But after a few cycles around, my knee loosened up and I was fine.

I overdid it that day, because I had vacuumed the WHOLE house and scrubbed the downstairs bathroom before we went riding...not a good idea. I think that's why I didn't have much stamina or energy.

Sunday was graduation at Qwest Field (football stadium). What no one told us was the huge distance to be walked not only from the parking lot but even within the stadium itself. We didn't figure out that I should have been dropped off in front until we had walked many many many long blocks (we'd never been to the field before).

I did it with one crutch because I had been told about the surface on the field--they put these plastic or rubber interlocking tiles on top of the grass and it was a very uneven and unstable surface and we had to walk the length of the field twice. I even held up the processional line and didn't care!

Was able to get up and down from the low, funky chairs just fine (no arms), and did fine on the ramps up and down the stage. My advisor/dissertation chair is a lovely, kind person, and he arranged it so that I was his last student to be hooded and he took my arm as we walked down the ramp.

I'm still exhausted from the weekend (and haven't slept well for two nights now!), but I DID IT. I didn't get any bone pain from the excessive walking and standing on Sunday, and I take that as a real plus.

Now I just need to recover my energy and hope the anti-depressants kick in soon.

WhoHoooo Doc Weezy! Congratulations are in order! I am so pleased for you! New knee, new Doctorate, what else could a gal want! We can't forget the bike ride either!

You WAY overdid it....you're a female...it's what we do!
Girl....I promise you (I'm living it)...it's not much longer until you won't think "knee" all the time.

Congratulations on all of your stellar accomplishments!!

Doc weezy, Congratulations not only on the degree, but also for the deknee. Rest and feel better. Sometimes the over do to exhaustion is what finally gets us to sleep. Sweet walking pain free dreams and even better reality.

Fantastic and congratulations!

And you other girls - great to see you around!

Coongrats Weezy! Sounds Like You Overdid It But It Was Worth It For All You Accomplished. You Are A Real Go Getter So I Think You Did What Any Of Us Would Expect Of You. Can't Keep A Good Woman Down, Huh? Again, Congrats On All, Rowdy

Congratulations on all your terrific accomplishments! Ain't life grand?

Thanks everyone!

and life IS grand--we live in a time and place where joints can be replaced and the granddaughter of penniless immigrants can end up a college prof with a fancy degree! No one in my family went beyond high school and education was not valued for women.

I'm both surprised and grateful, and feel very very very blessed.
