Was wondering who here has the oldest and youngest hip replacement. I am a 47 year old male who has had a total hip replacement at the age of 17, still going strong. I am wondering how long these hip replacements last.

My surgery was done by a doctor working out of Seton Hospitol in Austin, Texas. It took a grouling 8 hrs to complete. It had added 20 years of maturity to my life. I was in traction for two weeks prior to the surgery with the broken hip. Three hour shots of morphine injections is the only thing that got me through that. Back then they didn't use those automatic medicine dispensers, you got the needle.

I am 45 years old, Left THR in 1991, Right THR four weeks ago.

I've had mine in since 1988 and I'm now 55. The lining has worn so I have to get a revision. I also need a THR on the other hip.

They fought me tooth and nail for 16 years before they did the first replacement. I had hip displasia and was in agonizing pain but they kept saying I was too young. I'm shocked that they did yours at 17. Was it because of an accident?

As a nurse I scrubbed for several patients who had hip replacements at 98 and 99 years old!

My is not a reply, just a questiion. Since you had your surgery at such tender age and it is still going strong were you able to do most of the things that teenagers do?, like sport, dancing etc? Were you unable to do some things like jumping, running? Did you have to have special precautions with your hip for the past 30 years?. You give me hope and I can only imagine what might have been for a 17 year old to go through such a big procedure because at 17 I was having all the fun in the world and I didn't even know i had hip bones.

By the way my right hip is 6 months today and my left hip 8 weeks yesterday.
They both doing well and i hope they last 30 years like yours.

Sorry, Lighting, I missed this bit of your post. So you must have had your hip done in 1977 then? (Gosh, I was just starting my first theatre manager's post then!)

In my career we often put THRs in 20 year olds who'd had displasia or CDH as a child.

Secondly, the relative longevity of hip prostheses is generally thought to be between 10-20 years this being partially influenced by the type of materials it is made of. Ceramic and titanium are more resilient but they cost an awful lot more. Other factors influencing it are things like obesity and activity.
