I umped a game tonight that was the best baeball game that I have had ain a long, long time...the losing pitcher threw a one-hitter! Unfortunately, the batter before got on base because of a throwing error, and the one hit the pitcher gave up was a two-run dinger. (nothin' cheap about it---it had to go about 360 feet.) The winning pitcher scattered four hits and won, 2-1. Time of game---a blazing hour and 25 minutes!

My partners keep asking me how my knees feel--I tell that that I have titanium knees now and feel great---every now and then my ITBands seems to tighten up a little, but nothing that stretching won't handle. I have to chuckle about their concern---they have seen my scars, but do not realize that i do not hurt anymore---at least not there...

This is a good time of year. My son played ball from little league through Legion. Some of the best and worst moments of growing up on the diamond and in the bleachers.
Question, what is IT Bands?

Way to go Tim..It is good that your partners are at least aware and sensitive about it. I've been amused by some folks response to TKR. They kind of think TKR makes you a cripple. They don't realize it is stronger than before. My IT band is giving me problems too. It has gotten very tight and I am really straining to stretch it.

I have taught one Kenpo class a couple of weeks ago. Now I've been asked to teach an advanced kickboxing class this Friday...I'm debating on accepting it.

IT Bands are the Ilial-Tibial Bands that run down the side fo your quads on the outside ---a very tough ligament-like tissue I will try to find yo a pic...

Wow. That is a long and big "band" . If that hurts, you know it.

my right one bothers me from time to time--nuthin' a little stretchin' won't help...

How do you stretch it? Mine are sometimes very tight also. I try massaging it and that seems to help some.

Let me see if I can find a picture of a stretch for it. Trying to explain it might sound confusing.

Here you go. I like the side lean.

Here is what i do:

1)Stand upright
2)Cross the involved leg BEHIND the opposite leg
3)Lean to the uninvolved side until a stretch is felt across the affected iliotibial band
4)Hold for 30 seconds
5)Repeat X 5

Never had a problem until the bilats on 11/08---now I can tell aevery now and then that i need to stop and stretch.

I stretch gently when I get out of bed in the Am (well, most of the time, anyway...) and then i stretch before I ump, after I ump, and I stretch before I go to bed at night...it really, really helps.

Ref, Doug,
You two blow me away with how great you're doing. Umpiring, kickboxing good Heavens I'm just trying to walk. I think my baby brothers are trying to show me up is what I think.
All kidding aside you go with your bad selves, I think it's great keep up the good work.
Cathy

thanks Tim and Doug,

I guess I should run those by my Physical therapist because of my back....
If it's not one achy body part it's another.

Great that you had such a fun game, Ref. I was interested also to find out what "IT" was. I wonder why some people have pain there and others don't. That part of my leg has never hurt....either before or after surgery. I hope you are able to stretch it out. In my case, I have to keep working on the hamstring...it can tighten up on me and I lose a little extension. Guess we're all different!!

Josephine will be so proud of you guys for giving such great info!!

I started having problems with my IT prior to the tkr. Probably because the leg was bowing out so much it put a strain on the tendon. Hopefully as time goes by, things will realign..
Cathy, don't be too impressed with me teaching kickboxing. That pretty much me I get to strut around the class, yell and tell others what to do..Then afterwards, I have a meltdown and take a pill.
