Hi Folks

I was wondering how many of you that are 6 months plus postop still find they need NSAIDS. Before the BTKR, I was taking 12 to 14 aspirin a day (they work the best for me). I thought that after 6 months or so I would not need any. I dropped down to 4 or 6 a day then stopped but within a week the knees started swelling and not feeling right so back to the aspirin. I am finding that 6 a day are needed. Anyone else run into this?

Thanks

Simon

Yes, I still need NSAIDs but since I have OA in multiple joints other than my knees I might not be the best person to compare to.
Unfortunately, I can no longer take them because the combination of the NSAID(diclofenac) and Tylenol caused problems with my liver.
I miss the NSAIDs and have more pain and swelling without them.

I take some type of NSAID almost every day. Besides the knee needing them, I've busted up my hands and feet doing martial arts for years...

Sorry to hear that. It was the Tylenol (acetaminophen) that did in your liver. NSAIDS cause stomach problems. You might ask your doctor if you can still use a low dose NSAID.

Hi All,

There is some research that suggests that drugs like Prilosec can mitigate against some of the negative side effects of NSAIDS. You might want to talk to your doc or look it up on the web. Sorry but I don't have the link handy.

I have found that Prilosec or Prevacid have been a godsend for me. I think I will always have to take NSAIDS--just too many arthritic joints. I tried going without once and was incapacitated after a couple weeks or so.

I take an Aleve in the AM and one in the PM with my daily vitamins. This works out great for me!
Best,
Crystal

I'm 10 months out from RTKR and take an Aleve about 3 times a week when things start hurting. I tend to get some soft tissue swelling now and then and the Aleve does the trick.

I agree with Crystal! Take the Alleve! You don't need an ulcer!

Oh, my goodness I miss the ibuprofen, but it started causing me problems with my blood and multiple organs so I had to stop taking it. Tried Tylenol but no good and I am afraid of it. I take one aspirin early in the morning as a blood thinner and low-dose at night but rely on pain meds for relief now and it just is not as good as the ibuprofen. That was the best pain med I ever took. I do know what you mean though Simon about the knees and needing something. I wonder if we can still have arthritis in an artificial joing. LOL, Rowdy
