I had both my knees scoped and cleaned in the last 6 months. My left knee has been swollen for almost 3 months and I have been back to my Dr. and had it drained 4 times. My knee was in steady pain for almost that whole time.My last visit he x rayed my knee again and said that it was bone to bone and had arthritis. He suggested a full knee replacement. Now for whatever reason the pain has subsided where I can handle it now I am not sure what to do. Is this pain going to come back again? The pain was so bad before that if I so much as touched the inside of my left knee I would go through the roof. When I went to bed and rolled over it would wake me up. Any suggestions???

Yes - get it done! It's a trick of the mind that when we are confronted with an uncomfortabel truth, our symptoms go away. It's only temporary. Bone to bone is an extreme situation and will come back sooner or later. Waiting too long only risks you getting deformities in the bone which risks problems with recovery.

Thanks Josephine. I am 53 years and was hoping to prolong it for a few years because of the limitations you have once you get a TKR. I am a very active male (used to be) and hate to think of the things that I will no longer be able to do.

Hi DRC! I'm 52 and just had my second knee done. I waited over 10 years to be "old enough" and out of fear of not being able to do things. The reality is that over time the constant pain begins to wear you down, and without really realizing it, you begin limiting your activities and gradually change your life to accommodate the pain and then you're not doing what you want to anyway!

In the past there have been men (and women) on here who returned to refereeing baseball, skiing, mountain biking, and any other numerous activities. I think the limitations of the increasing pain are worse than the minor limitations of an artificial knee.

I am 51 and had my knee replaced nov 2008. It changed my life. I too had knee pain all the time. Eventually I had to walk with a cane all the time. a once active guy became crippled. I gained over 100 pounds in the 10 years I suffered. Now I am trying to work it off.
Now at 3 months out I am gaining back my mobility. Sure you are limited in what you can do after a TKR. But after 10 years I have my life back!!! Please dont put yourself through what I did... "Just Do It" . You will feel much better.
Sorry for rambling....

You mean you're not unable to do them now?

I was bone on bone at 35 and waited 10 years for surgery. I had BI-TKR 11 weeks ago and now I regret having waited for so long, I gave up an entire active part of my life. Although I realize 10 years ago the quality of the implants was no where near todays standards so the waiting was for the best. My surgeon told me now if I don't do activities that require running I may never need anything else done to my knees. I have my life back with very little limitations.

A second opinion is always a good idea to confirm the first DR. opinion. But in the case of bone on bone I would not wait any longer.

Best wishes

I'm 45 and now have both knees done. I tell people that I'm not bionic, just metallic.

Anyway, I was playing golf 3-4 months after my first knee replacement. Looking forward to going back to golf in April and bowling in a few more weeks. Plus I have a 7 year old to keep up with. Get your knee done before you do more damage. It will make your recovery so much easier.

DRC,,,,,,Just think of ALL the things you WILL be anle to do!!!

DRC

I waited about 20 years and not only were the knees bone on bone in all compartments but in one I had developed bone edema which is an indication of inflammation within the bone and has been associated with increase in pain. As the others have said, if you wait you will just be giving up more and more things you enjoy, it is not worth it.

47 here. Had both done in July 08. Wouldn't change a thing. Don't regret doing it. I have no pain. Good luck!

don't wait , i was bone on bone for ten years because my arthritis dr told me to wait as long as i could withstand the pain. BULL.
i can ride a bike , walk stairs, just about everything i couldn't do before all "without" pain why struggle to make do when you can do
good luck
just remember the more you put into pt the more you get back
