Hi everyone! I have had something new arise and wonder if anyone has come across this issue...
I had BTKR on June 18, 2008. Great recovery, my life if good! I skied this winter, have started walking for my overall general health (I had to give it up because of bad knees). Continue to work full time as a Family Child Care Provider currently caring for 4 children full time Monday - Friday.
Recently I have noticed my new knees starting to make noise! They make a noise like sponges being squished when I sit down and when I stand up. They sound like my old knees when I would walk up or down stairs..........
I am hoping my plastic spacer is not deteriorating too fast, or some other issue like that.... I will be seeing the OS in June for my baseline xrays. I will have this one done on the one year anniversary of the surgery and then more xrays every 2 years to keep tabs on the replacement spacer wear.
Anyone else run into this issue? Just wondering.
Thanks,
Crystal

Hi Crystal! Sorry to hear that your knee is starting to make noise! Although I'm a hippie,,,,,I just went to my OS yesterday for my checkup! The first thing he said to me that it I DID hear a squeak in my new joint,,,,that it was "normal and that I "shouldn't worry about it, that it was normal!" As long as you are not in pain, this just might be the nature of the prosthetic, If it really upsets you, why don't you call your OS's office to put your mind at ease! Good luck and let us know how you are doing! :)

I remember being told it had to do with your quad strength. Quad being part of what kept everything tight and lined up. I just had my one year in March and was thrilled to hear "perfect" . My OS will have me come in again next year and then after that go to every 2 years.

Crystal, I'd use my tried and true rule....if it bothers you, ask your doctor. Try a phone call first, but even if you need to go in for an appointment, it will be worth it to have your mind eased.

Well, my knee does some clunking here and there. But I look at it like this ... just shows how puny are man's efforts to copy something that God made! We never noticed our knees before. Never gave them a thought when, as kids and young adults, we'd jump off walls, do sports and generally throw ourselves around like lunatics! Until we started getting the old 'wear and tear' symptoms, that is!

But then we have these nice new knees put in and we're all agog because they make a noise! Well, they're solid objects and it doesn't take much space between them to allow a noise to occur when they come into contact. It doesn't mean the plastic is wearing out or things are getting loose from the bone or anything like that. Please don't worry about it. It indicates nothing and it will either eventually go away or you'll get used to it.

Crystal,
I know they can clunk but I have not read anything about squishy nosies. I guess what I am saying is I would talk to my Doctor about it. Since squishy was never brought up as a new knee noise. I myself would feel better to have Doc say that I was worrying over nothing. You know what I mean? And as you have said your knee's have really been great!!!!

Thanks everyone for all the input and advice. I have spoken to 2 other new knee friends and they are experiencing the same noise, so I am assuming it is normal. I will see when I see the OS in June. It was surprising to me that it started out of the blue.
Thanks again,
Crystal
