Do others suffer from night time pain? I do everything right during the day but just can't find a comfortable position at night. I asked my surgeon for a sleeping pill but he refused. I'm 9 weeks post knee replacement and exhausted from the relentless night time pain. I believe it's my IT band but I stretch as much as I can, use ice and pain meds but I still can't get comfortable. Sorry to be a complainer but I'm getting depressed.:sigh:

Did you try some over the counter sleep aid like benadryl? That's what I have been using since my surgery 3 weeks ago, and I sleep weel on it.

Hi Shelly, Your NOT! a complainer, and I have the same problem as you!
I've made an appt. with my PCP, and I'm gonna ask his advice. I ice,and
elevate, do my home exercises. I have ITB Issues and sometimes It gets
very frustrating, I've just bought some tylenol PM. I'm gonna try It!

A lot of people here have problems sleeping. You are 9 weeks out? Are you using any pillows to prop you up? Are you a stomach sleeper? I am and at 6 weeks I was finally able to sleep comfortably on my stomach with pillows at the side and now I don't need any except for my head of course. Are you taking any naps during the day? If so, maybe cut back on the nap or naps so that you can get more rest at night. And you are not a complainer

Hey Angie i know what you mean i think everything gets worse at night......lol........it will get better soon......it took me a few mths and it was alot better.....hang in there.............)

I had horrible IT band pain after the TKR. I ended up only being able to sleep on one side. This, in turn, caused other problems. My pain medicine of choice is pretty well known on this board, so I won't repeat it. However, I will suggest that you see a massage therapist to work out the kinks in your IT band. I'm back to doing everything I did prior to surgery (with recovery pain, but not osteoarthritis pain) but I still see the massage therapist each week. It does help.

Angie...everything seems more pronounced at night...only because you're so AWARE of everything! Don't worry....its normal!!!:cnsl:

Make an appointment with your PCP and discuss sleeping pills with him/her. I have taken 5mg of Ambien since about April - about the time my knees started to hurting so bad. I could deal with the pain but not lack of sleep. I will continue to take the sleep aide until the knees are completely healed. I have given up the hydrocodone pain meds - I think they contributed to some sleep problems I've had even taking sleeping pill.

Shelly,

I HIGHLY recommend both massage and acupuncture. I have been getting treatments of each once a week since about week 4 of my recovery (not cheap, but I figure I'm worth it:hehe:) and they have helped a lot with the anxiety, depression, pain and sleeping issues. If you can find a massage therapist that does mayofascial release (MFR), that might help with your IT band pain, as the IT is a band of fascia, not muscle or tendon, so it is really hard to actually stretch it much. I have IT band issues that irritate the bursae in my hips because of my wonky gait, and MFR has helped quite a bit.

I hope you find some peace of mind and get some good rest very soon!

Wow, your guys are so knowledgable! Like Jill, I too have hip bursa pain secondary to the tight IT band. I am going to follow the suggestions for finding a good massage therapist!!

Most everyone gets night time pain and it's mostly because you're not medicating enough. Do you take a full dose during the night? You're not trying to go through without anything, are you?

Other than that, it will pass, sooner or later. Sooner for some, later for others!

Im taking my full dose of Tramadol and Diclofenac in the daytime so when I wake in the night stiff and sore I hv to resort to paracetemol. Also its worse if I fall asleep with ice pack on so trying to avoid that!!! The only comfy position for me is on my back with a pillow under knee. Normally I prefer foetal position but if I so much as creep that way I soon know about it!!!!
Sweet dreams evrybody.

I have bad nighttime pain as well, but a lot of it is because the skin on my knee around the scar is so sore. I'm 4 weeks out tomorrow and I had a problem with skin sensitivity where I couldn't even touch the skin around my scar or would get terrible pain. This truly is frustrating.

So sorry, Victoria! Why don't you call your OS and tell him? Maybe he can prescribe an anesthetic cream! /ood luck! Everything seems morre pronounced at night anyway because we're supposed to be resting and therefore are aware of everything we're too busy with during the day! (:)0)
