Has anyone else had night sweats since surgery? I started in the hospital and am still having them. I also have woken up from sleep terrified of something. My surgery was 6/21/07.

Pam - would you like to pm or email me so we can have a good chat about this?

Pam,

i had partial knee replacement on 10-3, called "journey knee" things went well,i am 56, very active, not over weigth. i have been having terrible sweats and then shivering cold spells since surgery. i am home and still having them, i awake and the bed is wet!!

today i went without any pain meds except advil, it seems to be some better, but not much. what did you figure out?

Sorry it took so long to reply.
It was Chantix, the medicine they give you to quit smoking! I saw it on the news and knew immedately what the problem was. I stopped taking it and a week later the nightmares and sweats stopped. I don't know if this helps you.

I am so pleased you found out at last, Pam. That must be a weight off your mind. I will make a note of that for future reference.

Hi, I had bad sweats for two days after my last surgery. Minimal pain though. The Doctor said it was due to the anesthesia and epidural. I drank lots of water to get the medicine out of me and I was fine afterwards

I've had lots of bad night sweats. Thought it was menopause or something. I'll up my water drinking to see if that helps. I never thought this might be related to the surgery, but it started in the hospital and has continued every night.

I've noticed that since I'm using fewer pain killers at bedtime and drinking more water, my night sweats have lessened. Don't know it that is a coincidence or not, but thought I'd mention it. I'm so glad to have an improvement there!

Good Skeet, I am glad your feeling better. Those narcotic pain killers can cause problems. I am slowly decreasing them. Some days I take none, somedays I have to take one or two to get past PT!
God Bless,
Chuck W.

Thanks, Chuck. I saw the doctor yesterday and told him that 6 weeks PO I'm still on 3-4 a day, with an extra one on PT days. He said that is reasonable and that I will probably be on them somewhat up to 3 months. It is reassuring to hear that from the doctor as I sometimes worry I'm becoming an addict or something.

The night sweats are way down now that I've decreased the number of pain meds. That's a relief. Haven't had one for quite some time. I do still have some outrageous dreams, though.

hope you're doing better, too.

Skeet

People do worry about getting 'addicted' but that's really not the case. The more common scenario is for people to become dependent on the pills. But either will not happen so long as the person has pain to be treated. And it can take 3-6 months before that would occur anyway.

It's when people start taking them "just in case" and finally feel they cannot or dare not start their day without the reassurance of having had them. I doubt any of you would ever be in that position! It would never happen within such a short period of time as 3-6 weeks.

Hi Pam, I had bilateral tkh 8 weeks ago. I found that I had night sweats when I was still taking the narcotics. I stopped them at about 31/2 weeks and the sweats subsided. I traded them in for 2 advil 2x/day. I have a pretty high pain threshold so this worked for me. Not so much terrors, but I found that for weeks just thinking of what was done to me duringsurgery would bring me to tears. Keep the faith, things will get better. I am walking with no assistive devices and am sleeping better at night, but it took this long. Still quite a bit of discomfort in the left knee when standing for longer than 1/2 hour, but It sems to be getting better.
