Hi Folks,

I'm new on the site...I found it before my surgery in February, but lost it.

I had bilateral TKR on Feb 20 after having knee pain for the last 15+ years (I'm 54 so I tried to put it off as ling as possible). The surgeon made a half-hearted effort of talking me out of doing both knees, but when I told her that I realized the risks but wanted only a single stay and recovery we went forward with doing both (I think I was afraid that the pain would make me not want to go through with a second surgery). I went to the gym at least twice a week prior to surgery for a couple of months to maintain as much flexibility and muscle tone as I could...pre-surgery flex was 105° in the left knee and 110° in the right.

I was released from the hospital, using a walker three days after surgery. I did my exercises three times a day at home, taking oxycodone about an hour before I worked out. When I started outpatient PT the following week, I was able to ride the bike by the third visit. Then I started going to the gym another 2 days per week. I was lucky and was able to get almost 120° in both knees for flex and 2-5° in extension within the first three weeks or so.

At my 6 week visit, I was consistently getting 120 and 0 in both knees and I was off of the narcotic pain killers (after about 5 weeks) so the OS allowed me to start driving. I was able to go back to work part time then (too tired to work a full day...I needed my mid-afternoon nap).

I went for my 12 week evaluation with x-rays last week and have been cleared to do pretty much anything, including biking (I may have to change my pedals), hiking (should use hiking sticks/staffs), golf, and fly fishing. I also worked my first "full week" last week and figure that I'm back. I just have to take it easy (I'm an engineer and generally get out in the field ~25% of the time).

When I saw my surgeon last week, she asked if I was glad that I did both knees. I told her that in my case it worked well (relatively young, not too overweight, and generally in good health) and that I was very pleased with the result. She did indicate that because I am active that I will probably need revision at least once...I hope that I can keep it to just replacing the HDPE bearing and not have to change the prosthesis itself. I'm also looking forward to continuing PT on my own and see if I can pick up a few more degrees in ROM...the OS said that I may be able to get to 130° or so. We'll see.

Sorry for the bit of a ramble. I just wanted to thank those of you that I read before surgery and see if I can help anyone based on my experiences.

Take care,
Ed

HI Ed, It is always great to hear of a success story such as yours. I am 18 weeks RTKR and still struggling with my ROM which is now at 94, but I am still really pleased to be able to get back to enjoying a painfree near to normal life with my new knee. I may need that MUA as I can't get up and down stairs properly yet, but I have a lot of swelling in my knee still. Seems I am prone to it.

Thanks for posting. Sue

Hey, Ed. Thanks for the update on your BTKRs. Sounds like things went extremely well for you! I am so happy for you. I had my left knee done as a result of a athletic injury 20 years ago. I, too, hope I don't need a revision... but better that than the pain I had prior to. I'm at 5+ months and doing great. Welcome. I'm so glad our rantings were able to help you out!

Good morning Ed, Congrats on good proress with the Bi-Lat. I too had BTKR march 18, puts me at 9 weeks yesterday, and was blessed with a fantastic heal. Other than divine intervention, I truly believe that the pre-surg exercise, even minimally, just as you did was what made a huge difference in the come back. Anyway, best to you and keep posting.

Ed,
Thanks for posting. I am new to this group as of yesterday. I too have been doing preparation for my 6/18 upcoming BTKR. Your time line fits what I have heard and read of many others. I am hoping I am one who does not have to deal with infection of the new joint.
Nice to meet you!
Best,

I'm thinking how come so many people from Oregon are getting TKRs? Is it the
water, the wine or too much mushroom hunting?

I've only been in Oregon for 1-1/2 years. Before that I lived in New Hampshire...I got tired of those New England winters.

Hey Ed,
I'm just down the highway in McMinnville. Where did you get your knees done? Welcome to the forum. I am glad you are doing so well and gearing up for the terrific Oregon summer... I think we sort of skipped spring..... winter today.... who knows about tomorrow????

QUESTION:

water, the wine or too much mushroom hunting?

ANSWER: Excessive amounts of Tillamook cheese.

THOUGHT: According to Doug's accounts, he and his and family (especially the boy) may need to move west.

Where in NH were you located? I am in Plymouth, NH centrally located along I-93.......
I go for my BTKR on June 18.

I couldn't move to the North West...too cold, no grits, my accent...just sayin'

See, on the computer we don't hear the accents. But now I'm thinking, Tilamook cheese in the grits, mmmmmmmmm!

Lots of us have accents here... and we do have grits... just not on menus much.

We get TKRs because we are so active here in the gorgeous NW! Biking, skiiing, surfing, hiking, sports, you name it! And here, except maybe for baseball, rain doesn't stop us from doing most all of these.

Ship4, We were located in Lebanon, NH, about 35 miles SW of Plymouth. I lived there from 1984 until 2006 when I headed west.

Beachcomber, I had my knees done at St Vincents in Portland. As near as I can figure, the hospital does on the order of 25-30 knees per week, which means that the staff as well as the docs are pretty together in their treatment and attitudes.

This weekend, I'm going to jump on my bicycle and see if I can do a few miles on a bike path along one of the park trails in the neighborhood. If that works OK, I may try and ride to the light rail train to head to work...wish me luck.

Take care and we'll be back tomorrow.

Ed

Ed,
Thanks for getting back to me. Lebanon, NH sure has been built up over the years. I am a transplant to NH from NY. I attended Plymouth State, met my husband and stayed. I am having my surgery done @ Concord Hospital. My OS has a wonderful reputation and I was lucky to get in to see him. I had my consult on December 20th and decided the best time for me and my child care business for my BTKR to happen is in June. So, I am scheduled for the 18th.
Best,
Crystal aka ship4

I Don't Know If You Are The One Who Posted And Disappeared But If You Are You Got A Hospital Bed Which Was The Motivation For Me Getting One And It Was The Best Decision I Could Have Made. Keeps The Dogs Out Of My Bed And That Alone Makes It Worth It. Glad To See You Back Though Even If You Aren't That Person, We Need To See More Btkr's. I Definitely Would Not Do It Any Other Way And Am Glad I Did It. Rowdy
