Something I've been meaning to ask for a while now - I had a LTHR late October and I'm still wearing some of the shoes that I had been before I had it done. However - I'm now (obviously) walking very differently to how I did beforehand - and my left shoes no longer seem to fit as well as they did. Almost like they have been stretched to one side. Do you think I should still be wearing them (some of them are favorites!) or do you think I could be creating future problems??

- like I need an excuse to go out and buy MORE shoes................! :)
But seriously - I'd hate to think I'm doing the wrong thing! Has anyone else had this happen?

I needed some slip-on shoes when i realised I could no longer tie my own shoe laces, so my wife introduced me to Merrill shoes. I'm a big believer in wearing "good" shoes, my construction boots are Red Wings and my daily and dress shoes have been Ecco for quite a while, and my tennis shoes have been New Balance; all terrific shoes. so i was skeptical that I would like these weird looking things she showed me.

You can have my Merrills, when I die - and not a day before!

Great fit, well made, and my feet don't hurt after standing or walking all day. Give them a try:

I found the same thing with Pothia shoes. Happened to find them at one of those special displays at Costco when I really needed to switch to slip-ons. Love them!

Thanks Mudpro and Karen - I guess I knew the answer would be to get new "good" shoes - I just wanted it in writing! LOL :)

Go shop and enjoy!

[Bonesmart.org] New shoes??

Oh, Jo!!!!! Can we have one in every color?
Peta,,,,,that is such a great question! I'm at the point that I can start wearing my fave shoes, but I haven't noticed any change yet!
The shoes that Mud recommends are really good, sturdy shoes! But truthfully, don't expect to make any fashion statements,,,,but they are REALLY sturdy shoes when you need to do a lot of walking!
You'll be making your own fashion statement if you decide to wear a pair with a stylish with them (if you know what I mean! :)

Whoops! That came out a little garbled! I meant ,,,,with a stylish outfit!
No elf shoes though, I guess! Peta Pan! :)

Yes I knew what you meant Judles! :) I guess it IS all my "pretty" shoes that I will be sorry to part with! I have a couple of pair of quite sturdy, very comfortable walking shoes which don't seem to have been affected so they are still okay to wear. But my REALLY beautiful, "play princess - dress-up" shoes might have to go............ :( (person)

P.S. However - now I have Jo's approval to buy more............................! :)

After things are healed and feeling human and of course got the restrictions lifted etc can you wear heels (low ones-I'm not a stiletto girl) but it would be good to be able to wear a dress shoe again rather than the tedious olde boring flatties.....remember I'm reinventing my identity so maybe I could start with nice looking shoes rather than old lady shoes!!! I'll skip on the mini skirts!

and imagine wearing boots that I could actually do up without having to be a contortionist...laces are out of the question as I can't bend forward at the hip very far so I can't do them up.......mack

Just last night my husband and I went out to dinner and I wore heels! Well - not flats anyway! LOL I've never really been into very high heels - so these were about 4cm heel height. Amazing how a bit of a heel (no matter how low) can make you feel "dressed up"! I didn't have any problems Mack - but I didn't do very much walking either. I still have to be careful cos my other hip isn't good.
And I'm with you on the mini-skirts..............!

Guess I was lucky in that I probably wasn't too lopsided before my THR, so all my shoes are fine--including the pumps & boots with the 3" heels! (Well, maybe not so lucky--I don't have the 'gotta shop' excuse! Hubby calls me "Imelda" already . . .)

PR.....You can always show you hubby that cool shoe store pic Jo just posted, & tell him you need a few pairs for therapy!
We'll back you up! :)

I bought a pair of Merrill slip on wool shoes which i just love. Both of my daughters think they are slippers and probably are embarrassed to be seen near me, but I love them. Like Mudpro said they are so comfortable.
I have had no less than 10 people ask me what about them and where to get them
I always go for comfort.

Good morning! The best part of HR is that shoe options come back into your life. This is the first winter in several years that I could comfortably put my leather boots on and zip them up. So great. And now I can wear flats as I don't need the cushion as before.

My Dr said that wearing my old shoes wouldn't have any negative effect on my new hip or walking. However, this spring I plan to expand my shoe wardrobe w/o the former limitations of slip ons with low heels.

Also, got some really comfy merril hiking boots per Judy's recommendation. They are great for high arches and wide feet. Size is fine but if I order more merrils will go up a size. (just an fyi)

Gotta get up and get moving, snowy today, but will get to work eventually.

Its funny the whole flattey thing and slip ons. It never occurred to me until now that there were other people out in the world who could only wear flat, boring shoes, or that couldn't do up laces, or that pined for trendy boots but stuck with clod hoppey sports shoes because they needed the "support". What a delight to find that I'm not alone! especially when it comes to the frustration of boring shoes. I remember the day I was liberated by finding a "sock putting on " gizmo. Meant I could do it myself, which meant that I could wear skirts with stockings and not have to get someone to help me. That was a great day. Will I get to a point when I can do up shoe laces again? are there any bending over restrictions for that sort of things? When I was little I had a caliper (metal brace) thing because of the Perthes. I have a vague recollection of the shoes....great big ugly black boots...(I was only 2 or 3) I used to squash snails for my mother as she did the gardening. Anyway It wasn't until I was buying shoes for my daughter (who was only 3 or 4 at the time) that i had a flash back of these monstrosities and subsequently skipped on practical play shoes for her and bought instead the most beautiful patent leather party shoes for her instead! Once I am able I'll be buying some pretty little shoes for me....and I'll get some practical walking shoes as well! Thanks for giving me some goals folks...riding across the harbour bridge, buying new shoes......stay tuned for some more....Rachel Mack

That's the spirit,Mack! We all need our incentives!!! You're sounding better already! :)

Hi Rachel,

Don't you just hate asking other people to do up your shoes. Well there is light at the end of the tunnel. You need to observe your precautions in the early days, but as the muscles start to rebuild and cuddle your new hip you will be able to do up your own shoes. I actually did it 3 weeks after but got in trouble from my OS he said it was too early for that movement. OOPS!

The only thing I have trouble with now is putting pants and knickers on, I still have to take the pants to the foot not the other way around. Find it easier to sit to put them on. Others have expressed the same difficulty and others don't. It's all relative to the person.

Have a lovely day, gorgeous sunny day down here.

Chris :)
