Got my staples out Tuesday and so since I had no problem getting in and out of my Dad's car I was able to cancel my home visits with PT and return to out patient PT at the hospital. I have Joseph...the same PT I had when I was in the hospital. He's not very happy at the moment with the PT I had at my home. 1st thing: She told me to take more vicadin because I had some swelling. It's not an anti-inflamatory so that wouldn't help. I just needed to elevate more and ice more which I have done...swelling is gone. The recent swelling was from the 2nd thing he's not happy about. Most of the exercises she had me doing consisted of standing at the sink and doing stretching and lifting. He said one hour at the sink standing was not good. And when we worked on bending, I thought I was doing great at 95 but actually, I'm only at 75 and 80 degrees now. When she had me doing my bending, my butt was higher in the chair, my legs were at an angle and that's when she measured me so naturally my degree will be higher. So now I feel like I'm back at the beginning. Joseph said we will work hard to get the scar tissue broken up so the I can bend more. The thing that I don't get is when she worked with my bending, she would see how far I could go on my own and never ever gave me that extra shove to make my knee bend a little more. Joseph...he pushes the heck out of me...it's a pain that hurts sooo good! Does that make since? On a good note I haven't needed any pain meds for 2 days, however I might start needing a little bit for PT with Joseph. Which is fine. I just feel a little down because I "thought" I was doing so good. Yes, I'm still able to do almost everything by myself and I'm pain free but the bending...wow...what a damper! I'm just going to keep the positive attitude...I WILL SUCCEED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:thmb:

I forgot to say that when Joseph and my Dr. PUSH my knees, they do go to 90 and 95 degrees...just not on their own.

Hey Cindy my home PT did the same thing they seem to measure different but you are so early you can make that up. Standing at the sink yep never heard of that one though...Keep your chin up you will get there...Take the meds if you have to...:) Good Luck...

Cindy--
Be gentle with yourself--it's very early in your recovery and you will see lots of improvement in the comming weeks! We all get impatient but it takes lots of time and work to get the results we want. Keep up the good work.

Blessings,
Irene

Cindy,
You rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you keep up like this you might as well get on interstate 80 and come on over to Iowa!!!! You are going to be getting bored before your recovery time is up!! And we can see if we can come up with a Cookbook for "Bonesmarties"!!!!!!!!!!!! We will have to figure out a great name for it!!! Something like the "Down and out knee cookbook". Something really catchy. LOL ROFL
You just keep healing super fast ok?????
Now on the serious side. How is your pain doing? Is it still managable? Has it gone up a notch or 2 with PT??? Remeber to keep ahead of it. OK?
Take care I am on my way out to PT and curves and then I wll be back to clean at the Church. But I should be back on tonight if I don't kill myself off!!!! LOL

Cindy
I did a lot of stretching at the sink along with othr exercises.
My PT never pushed on me and my ROM is great. I guess
I don't have much or any scar tissue.

But the PT should not have measured with your hip up in air.

I do hope you get lots and lots better.

I am not a fan of home pt---I felt much better when I went to the gym the three days after my surgery. I liked getting out of the house and I know and respect my pt.

I could see it if you live alone and have trouble getting to the gym, but my one friend who did home pt has a much less rom than I do--I think she wasted her first three weeks.

What pain? I take a pain med before PT for the pain that I know is coming...never gets there. I can feel pressure during the bending etc. but after the release, it's gone. I have no pain at all...ever. I guess I'm lucky. Somebody told me since I have no pain, I'm not working hard enough...is that true? I'm doing exactly what Joseph said to do only a little more. If he ask me to do 20, I ask can I do 25.

Kelly,
I agree. Home PT was a waste! Thank goodness I'm able to get into my Dad's car now. My last session with her was a joke!!! She came in a bad mood because her boyfriend's ex-wife and her got in an argument. I don't care. I wanted to do some stretching outside on my deck...that has helped a lot. Her response to that..." I'm so hot and upset right now, I don't want to go outside, we'll figure something out to do inside where it's cool!" Can you believe that?

Being back with Joseph will help a lot I know.

Important to trust your PT and like them too. I did really like my home PT. He was aggressive and I was progressing nicely until I tore the meniscus in the left left. :hissy: I am requesting him with my LTKR, as I don't have any hospital rehab and come straight home.

Didn't care for the PTs at my outpatient, however since I have changed to Quest, I really like the one I work with on Mon and Weds. She is great and I get alot accomplished. She is helping me with my left leg as well. The others didn't even want to do any preparation for the left leg, since their 'orders' were written for the RTKR! Some are just better than others. So make sure you are happy with who you have, or replace them until you find one you can work with.

Hope you continue to do well Cindy!

Cindy, you might want to have a chat with this gal's supervisor at her home health company. They need feedback like this to counsel the staff to be better home therapists. It's not ratting on them....it's helping them to be better. Otherwise managers have no way to know what goes on in those home sessions. This would be especially true since she measured your ROM so incorrectly.....it may have been on purpose to make it appear she was getting better results.

Have to say if your home PT was a waste you did not have a good one. My recovery is as good or better than most and I credit my home PT for it. I recently did aqua PT and the therapist was very impressed with my abilities also the therapist I am using now at a center credits the home therapist with my recovery. However, I must say the therapist I used had several degrees in related medical fields and she was hands on therapist, which some home therapist or not.

I did a lot of research before going with the home health group and my research paid off.

I have no problem sitting, walking, going up and down stairs,
taking long trips, biking, hiking, or squatting I have not tried kneeling because Jamie said to wait until 6 months out.

I don't push and I am doing fine. By the way I don't have any pain after biking, hiking or any of the things I do. If I get stupid and not pay attention to what I am doing I have pulled the IT Band, but the pt massages that out.

I am sorry you found your home pt to be a waste. I am happy with mine. She measured by ROM two days after I left the rehab hospital and her measurements were almost exactly the same. Since then I have shown steady improvement. She really pushes me giving that extra stretch you mentioned. It hurts like crazy as she does it but I know it is good for me so that makes it easier to endure.

I have found the at home pt a great convenience. Even though I can get in and out ouf a car fairly easily, I have no one to take me to out-patient pt. Also, if I want to stick with the same company as the rehab hospital pt I will have to travel about 30 minutes each way. Having the pt come to my house has been wonderful.

I agree with the advice you were given to report you home pt to the supervisor. You will be doing future patients a huge favor.

My home PT was also the best, he really worked hard with me and when I went to outpatient therapy after two weeks, they said he had done a great job with my knee. The OS at my 2 wks checkup said the same, very good progress in the first two weeks.
