Not a new surgeon, I still have the wonderful one I've had all along and my follow-up with him is September 3rd.

For those who don't know, I go to the Veteran's Administration hospital (an hour away from where I live) because my husband is 100% service-connected disabled. Because of his 100% service-connected status, they give us health insurance (no dental, which is so lame with three kids). Ten years ago, they started the CITI program for spouses at the VA hospital. At the time, I was healthy, took only one pill a day (thyroid pill) and had no other issues. Now, I'm on a plethora of medicines for various long-term ailments (such as asthma and high blood pressure).

Anyway, we get doctors who are at the end of their student time- and usually we get them for three years (then they graduate or change specialties). I've been to h-e-double-hockey-sticks and back with my pain issues. The knee problem has been ongoing for over 20 years and 3 years ago when I injured my right knee (again), the good doctor I had then started what treatment he could... then graduated. (My pain issues aren't all knee-related. I've got arthritis and some other "itis" issues in other body parts).

The doctor I got stuck with then was a jerk. "You knees hurt because you're overweight."... No, doc, that's not it. I'm overweight because my knees hurt. Fix the knees, the weight will go away. It took THREE LONG PAINFUL years before this kid doctor gave me a letter of referral to see an off-site surgeon. And bam! Got my knee replaced.

He's since moved on and today I had an appointment with my new doctor. She's fantastic. She's going to work with me on my pain issues and try and get things fixed or at least, managed. (we have some red tape issues to jump through, but she's willing to try). She asked about my knee and knee-replacement and such. I told her of my difficulty in exercising and how I've tried walking a mile- did it twice, had to stop, tried again... and so on.

She told me I should cut that in half. Do only a half a mile. She told me (reminded me, because I knew) that it is better for me if I walk a half a mile on a regular basis (three times a week, whatever) than it is to try a mile once a week. I said I know, I was trying to start slow. She said a mile all at once after almost 4 years of nothing wasn't all that slow of a start. "Start slower" she said. :hehe:

So, I'll try it... half a mile to start... and when I can do a half a mile every day with ease, I'll increase... and so on and so forth.

But it is SO REFRESHING to have a doctor who listens to me. She even went back in my records to see what my weight used to be and how thin and healthy I was before all this. She also thinks that doctor I had before her is a jerk.

I have a follow-up with her in two months to see how our pain management plan is working (or not working as the case may be). It'll be nice to function without pain- or at least with a tolerable level.

Hey there long time no see.......I know you are so happy that you got a new Dr I know you didnt care you the other one. I also know you have other issues and he should have listened to you...Im happy for you she sounds like she really cares.I hope you can get the rest of this straightened out...I agree take it easy and go slow, you will get there..Keep your chin up. I wish the best for you.....Good Luck...:)

Yeah!!!! So happy for you. This new doctor sounds like a keeper to me. Hope you get back on track, (no pun intended) and are able to be active and healthy once again.

Let us know how the 1/2 mile goes. I am looking forward to be able to walk for pleasure again without all this pain.

Froggie,
I am so glad that you have a Doctor that you feel good about!!! After the Jerk you had!!, She must be like a breath of fresh air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey there long time no see.......

I didn't go anywhere, I check in here daily, I just don't post all that much because right now, everything is... plodding along with nothing spectacular to share.

As for the mile, I never had much trouble getting the half mile away, and even part-way home. That's when it got tough! I'll defintely keep you updated on how it goes with a half-mile as my start instead of pounding out a whole mile. I just loved the way she said, "Start slower..." it cracked me up in the office.

Whoop, whoop, whoopie!!!! So glad you have a great doc for a change!!! Hopefully she'll be with you for a while. I know that "changing doctor" thing is one of the bad parts of the military service doctor program. I remember that from when I was a kid going to the military hospitals....never saw the same person twice and I hated it!

I grew up an Army brat- delivered by a doctor wearing combat boots and OD greens. I had my kids while my husband was in the Army and I've had major surgery in an Army hospital- there's nothing the VA can do to me or throw in my direction that I can't deal with!

But, somewhere in the last ten years, they changed their doctor-assignment policy and now if you don't like your doctor, you can be re-assigned. Did they bother to tell existing patients? Nope! If they had, I'd have changed out that other doctor after the first time he insisted: "You need to exercise to lose the weight so your knees will stop hurting..." and then ten minutes later telling me to "stay off your feet" because of the foot pain I had in relation to tendonitis and plantar faceitis (or however that's spelled!). So, simultaneously, I'm supposed to get off my bum and exercise while somehow staying off my feet. :hehe:

Anyway, I've got the good doctor for at least three years. We'll see how things go. :D

Oh froggie, you crack me up! I so love your positive way of attacking life head on. 'in yer face' about covers it! You go girl.

I aslo breathed a sigh of relief when you saw the title of your thread! I'm so pleased for you. It's good to have a good medic, one who will work with you instead of against you.

So glad you have won the "doctor sweepstakes" this time around. Maybe she'll be around long enough to get your issues stabilized. I guess that old doctor wanted you take up walking on your hands for exercise.

Yes a good PC doctor is so important these days and glad you finally got one. The change doctor things is not just the military as many people face that if there employer changes health plans. The lack of continuity with a PC doctor is a major problem with health care these days. I am glad I am in Vermont as in most places there is only 1 primary care practice and 1 major insurance company so even if you change companies you usually don't lose your primary care doctor. I have a great one and that has made things easier to handle.
