Wow I wish I knew about this site a long time ago. I'm so glad alot of you had great experiences with your hip replacements. I just wanted to share my experience with you. unfortunenatley my sugery didnt go well or should I say recovery didnt. while in the hospital I complained about pain and was told that it was normal, and it will take time to heal, so I was sent home and still had alot of pain. Even my pain meds didnt work. My husbsnd and I both called the doctors office and was told the same thing ,"Its normal and It will take time". well my 2week appt came and I had an x-ray done and SURPRISE!!!!! my hip was dislocated and my femor was broken! back to the hospital for surgery #2. needless to say I'm still going thru recovery and now have alot of knee problems. But I will get through this too. In Time!!!! Thanks for being here:]

Hello, did you ask the doctor how your hip was dislocated and the femur broken? Obviously, this happened at the hospital just after your operation! Do you remember doing something wrong while recovering? You would have felt something. Now that you've had the second hip replacement do you feel as sore as the first? I haven't had my surgery yet, but i remember the surgeon saying that it happens that at the time of surgery accidently while working on the femur it could break, and he said that they would have to correct the break. I'm sorry to hear of your bad experience but hopefully after this you'll be on the road to recovery. Best wishes. Sonia S.

Thanks Sonja S, No the only remark my doctor said to me is what did you do fall or something? The thing about this doctor is that hes was a recommended ortho specialist,my ortho thought that this doctor could give me a liitle more lenghth to my hip because he specializes in that. I think my femor was cracked while the shaft was being drilled and he didnt know it. well anyway I'm back at my own doctor and he just cant believe what happened, so now we're just working on getting me better. I hope my experience doesnt stop you from doing your surgery, I one of the few that had a hard time. Keep in touch if I can be of any help. Thanks hippain2

Hi Hip,
Wow I am sorry for the awful experience you had! Have you had the second surgery already? If so, how long ago? I hope they get it right this time. At least a year from now, it will all seem like a bad dream I hope. I actually had a similar experience. For me, when they were doing my second (left) hip, the surgeon wanted a different size ball than he first put in and sent a tech to get one. Aparently it was not the usuall factory rep tech and they got the right size ball but the wrong material. It was not until they reviewed the surgery 2 days later, after I was nome that they found the error. So I too had to return for a second surgery a week later. Man was I ticked. But now I am a year out and both hips are working well, so in the grand scheme of things it wasn't the end of the world.

As for the knees, I had that problem too. My hips felt great but my back and knees were not! My new painfree hips allowed me to walk straighter and stronger and the other joints took time to get use to the new me. It did take time and I went to a PT who is a gait specialist who helped me relearn how to walk normaly. Keep up your PT:)

Andrea,

I was curious, who paid for the second surgery since it was the doctors fault??

panamfe, thanks for the reply, I suppose insurance covered itcause I never recieved anything but people ask me that question alot , I dont see that doctor anymore. I go to my first ortho, and I never heard my the doctor who did my surgery after january, he probably thinks I;m going to sue him.

NOT ME!
The hospital picked up the bill on the second surgery. It was a stupid mistake, I found out later that the boxes with the femoral heads are marked by size but not material! Once out of the box they look the same. So when the head was brought to the surgeon he did not have much to go on. Fortunalty the hospital does review all surgeries which is when they picked up the mistake and they immediatly got hold of me to fix it.

I do not hold anything against my surgeon, I still think he is wonderful. He bent over backward to get me right back in and fix me up. He is the only one that apologized to me and he really felt horrible it happened. I can not say the same for the rest of the hospital that really treated me awful after the second surgery!

Hippain2: How are you doing?? Did the second surgery fix things enough to give you some pain relief? How are your knees doing? I am glad you are not going to the surgeon that botched the first job! Hope you are well!

ripanco, your one of the lucky ones. I'm was glad to here your doctor did everything for you to make it right. mine couldnt even look me in the eye and didnt really feel bad for me actually in when I was in his office and found out that I had a dislocation and the femor broke he said to me what did you do??? and didnt even offer me a wheel chair to get back to the car. well some doctors are better than others at bedside manners. I still have pain in my hip at times but I still cant step up with my newhip and go up a stair with out something to hold on too.so I have to find a strengthening excercise for that. Hope you are well, keep it touch. Hippain2

Felt More Encouraged By Hippain2. I Too Had Hip Replacement Surgery. All Was Well And Great For 3 Days. I Was Doing So Well And Was Getting Ready To Go Home. As I Was Dressing, An Intensive Pain Occured. I Screamed Murder. The Dr. Thought I Was Looney And Not Pain Tolerent. After Several X-rays And A Cat Scan, He Discovered He Had Torn My Femur And It Was Grabbing My Nerve Endings. Stayed In The Hosp. Till The Next Surgery 10 Days Later.that Was Sept. 13th--o7.what A Nightmare. Still In Therepy. I Am 70 And Miss My Life, As I Was A Grandma Tennis Player. My Dr. Never Said He Was Sorry---bummer. jozolo, wow it sounds like youve been through alot. I hope things get better for you. I still have hip pain but cant really doo anything about it right now because I have no Insurance. So I'll have to take it easy. its been really hard for me, But I try to stay possitive. I hope your surgery goes well. And take it slow dont push to hard!!! Judy

Hippain2---thanks For Your Reply. I Am New At This. Sorry You Have No Ins; But You Can Apply Your Pt At Home. Riding A Bike Or Walking In The Water. I Slept On A "memory Pad" Last Night; Recommended By The Therepist. It Did Ease The Pressure From Lying On The Clamp!!!!! My Surgery Was On Sept.13th,07. It Has Been A Long Haul, But I Am Getting There And Hope To Put This Behind Me. Hope All Stays Well With You. Josie Or "jozolo"

Fyi---i Was The One With The 2 Surgeries As Well. I Wrote About The Clamp Placed On My Cracked Femur Giving Me Discomfort. Hard To Sleep Or Sit;like Sitting On A Rock.i Forgot To Tell Hippain2, My Therepist Recommened A "memory Mattress Pad" What A Difference. Slept On It For The 1st Time Last Night. The Best Sleep Since Suegery.-------------josie
